    Thought this story was interesting to the beer audience outside New Hampshire because of the presence of youth groups specifically claiming they feel targeted by childish beer labels. I also thought this comment from the Dover Youth 2 Youth group was a fair and concise criticism;

Youth… under 21 or really youth as in under 18 and bellow?

I dunno if it’ll make a difference from the reasonable point of view that kids really shouldn’t be drinking.

On the targeted audience however I’m just ticking a bit at the fact that supposedly will attract and appeal to younger people. Damn, when I was a late teen I did my best to look older, and act older so smoked the odd cigarette and drank the odd cheap low ABV beer. I had long stopped dreaming being a pilot/firefighter or Bruce Willis in the Die Hard saga.

That’s maybe a reasonable approach. Dunno how it’ll apply.

I believe that Spuds MacKenzie was just discussing this very thing with Joe Camel down at the Retired Spokes-Animal Rest Home the other day.

    Well, that's embarrassing! Oof.

It's Live Free or Die. But, leave it to the Dover 'youth' to go all pansy. That's no surprise.

I'd like to believe that our state's more typical youths rival any other underage beer-per-capita stat!

I think it's part of a wider trend of younger generations being more and more cautious about life in general.

But yeah, it's kind of funny that the state this is bubbling up in is the "live free or die" state

Okay, but are these youngsters hanging around in liquor stores or the liquor department of the local grocer?

Are the NH convenience stores and gas stations stocking beer next to the soda and energy drinks?

And about those "energy drinks," aren't they as detrimental to health as some alcohol?

Ah, they were making alcoholic beverages before you were born, kid.

State-run liquor stores here only. No beer, or subject beverages, sold there. No refrigeration either.

Yes, if they are small enough.

But, if you are old enough to purchase your own beverages, it is a clear enough distinction.

    Of course but that's tangential.

Really, the giveaway here is anyone complaining about feeling 'targeted' by advertising.

Like it or not, I believe that's the point. Victim mentality is unhealthy.

Which is what? Yes, kids are allowed in liquor stores.

Accompanied by an adult, but still not allowed to pick out a six-pack and purchase it (whether at a state-run "liquor store" or wherever beer is sold).

I didn't understand why you had to point out the difference between your liquor stores and wherever you buy beer -- I was just saying that I don't see why these youngsters are thinking they're being targeted when they shouldn't really be shopping in the stores, departments, locations where adult beverages are sold.

Really just trying to clarify your question, as they are two distinct physical entities. Conversely, there is no liquor at our grocery/convenience.

Guess it sucks to be in NH. No wonder the youth are rebelling.

(sorry, just being facetious for the sake of now -- very foreign sales ops in NH compared with here in IL or WI -- makes me wonder how the NH youth are being targeted by breweries when they can't even walk past it in a convenience or grocery store)

We are derailing the thread with semantics, and our mutual misunderstanding of each others wording.

No doubt NH "liquor laws" are confusing.

Liquor (booze/spirits), wine, and beer (and like-abv malt beverages) are 3 different things here as deemed by our state. Liquor is only sold in state-run stores, which also sell wine, but not beer or the like. Beer and the like, AND wine are sold at convenience/grocery. It's nonsense, but it's wildly profitable for our state in lieu of state income tax. That and road tolls.

Your general point that youth cannot legally purchase any of whatever they are complaining about stands here in NH, and in any state haha. Agreed!

Sounds to me like some tea-totaling teacher assigned a group project to the health or political science class to undertake a project against youth drinking, and they targeted the advertising and labels in the alcoholic beverage industry via the Liquor Control Commission. Somebody lit the fire under the commission members.

More relevant to the health and welfare of under-agers is the enforcement of the liquor laws. How often are licensed beverage outlets checked for ID compliance? I was underage in urban Oregon in the 60s, and enforcement in all areas was strenuous. The local newspapers periodically featured articles listing licensed stores and taverns/bars that were fined and had license suspended for a period of weeks, or more. Liquor bottles had unique inventory numbers that were linked with the buyer at the state store. If the bottle was found with a minor, the purchaser could end up in trouble. How is enforcement done in NH?

That's badass here. They pop businesses often enough, and have become so notorious with fines, sentences, and fear instilled, that nearly everywhere cards, regardless of age. Even the very elderly. It's a bit much, but usually taken in good humor. My dad is 81 and gets a kick out of being asked to prove he's over 21.

Firsthand adversarial knowledge of the liquor commission here, with 20 years of my misspent youth working in the service industry, managing restaurants both privately-owned and corporate.

Overall we have very good policing in NH across the board. It's appreciated.

The marketing to kids angle is never really about actual children obtaining the product so much as it's about the fear that their young minds are being manipulated into desiring the product so that the groundwork for addiction is being laid in their impressionable phase
