Funk Asheville: A Gathering of Wild & Sour Beers Scheduled for May 30, 2014
Presented by Wicked Weed Brewing to Benefit Pints for Prostates

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Wicked Weed Brewing is partnering with Pints for Prostates to launch Funk Asheville: A Gathering of Wild & Sour Beers to be held May 30 from 7-10 p.m. as part of the 3rd Annual Asheville Beer WeekTM. The event will bring some of America’s top brewers of barrel-aged sour beers to Asheville and will create an experience beyond just a beer festival.

Funk Asheville will be held in downtown Asheville at the Wicked Weed Funkitorium, a new 12,000-square-foot barrel aging facility located at 147 Coxe Ave., just a 3 blocks from the brewery. This will be the first event at the newly-remodeled facility. In addition to barrel-aged, sour and wild beers, Funk Asheville will feature unique entertainment and an art installation, celebrating all things funky in Asheville.

“Sour or wild beers have become the cutting edge of American craft beer. Sours have really caught the attention of beer fans and some of America’s best up and coming craft brewers are doing incredible things with the style,” said Walt Dickinson, Head of Brewing and Wood Cellar Manager at Wicked Weed Brewing. “Funk Asheville gives people in the southeast a chance to see what the best and brightest brewers are doing with American sour and wild beers.”

Tickets for Funk Asheville are $80 with a $5 service charge and go on sale on April 15 at Noon via Etix. A total of 500 tickets will be sold to the public for the event, which will be held on the eve of the popular Beer City Festival. VIP tickets for Funk Asheville are $100 with a $5 service charge, and will provide access to guests for an hour preview including food provided by Wicked Weed, music, and the opportunity to hang with the brewers. As part of the event, a silent auction benefiting Pints for Prostates will be held featuring unique beer experiences and collectible items.

“Our mission is to reach men through the universal language of beer and this is the second year in a row that Pints for Prostates will host an Asheville Beer Week event,” said Rick Lyke, founder of Pints for Prostates. “Our message to men is simple: Get tested. Live longer. Drink more beer.”
Invitations to brewers to pour wild and sour beers at Funk Asheville have been issued and commitments are starting to arrive. A complete list of breweries and beers expected at the event will be announced shortly, however we have a preliminary list of confirmed breweries including New Belgium, Perennial, Green Man, Trophy, Yazoo, Natty Greene’s, Oskar Blues, & Green Bench.
Sour and wild beers embrace a wide range of historic brewing styles still popular today in Belgium, France and Germany, including lambic, Flanders red, gose, gueuze, Berliner weisse and saison. The use wild yeasts like, Brettanomyces, and bacteria, like Lactobacillus, add varying degrees of sour notes to the beer, which are often enhanced through barrel aging and bottle onditioning. American craft brewers have expanded the range of these beers to develop distinctive sour and Brett-style beers.
Funk Asheville is another reason for beer lovers to visit Asheville. It helps to anchor the final weekend of Asheville Beer Week with the Beer City Festival, making this one of the most exciting two days in craft beer in the United States.

For real. A full meal should be included with a price like that.

I think this is where the bubble bursts. First, $80 is insane unless you have russian river, crooked stave, cascade, upland all in the initial lineup. Secondly, who pays $80 for regular admission and not $100 for a vip admission? Dont get me wrong, there are people who will eagerly pay this, but they are alienating a lot of folks who have been supporting them and unable to drop a hundo for natty greens american sour.

No offense to natty greens and thier american sour. I have heard that the natty greens lambics are awesome. Point being bubble> burst. For 40,000-50,000 dollars worth of contributions, I would hope there would be 8oz of cable car for everyone.

Sierra Nevada's charging $65.00 for a ticket to their opening event with a higher price ticket for a private function first. Doesn't seem that Wicked Weed is all that out of line. Of course, you could be opposed to the price Sierra Nevada is charging as well. >shrugs<

Personally, if I want to go, dropping $100.00 doesn't bother me. I'll do that to see a concert, watch a live Football game, play a round of golf (have to be a real good golf course though), go watch UNC play basketball, heck buy a case of paintballs and spend an afternoon playing. It is all relative. Edit: In fact, it is probably close to $200.00 to get into Disney.

Sierra Nevada beer camp is 5 hours, including many top national breweries not distributed here. WW is 3 hours, and so far, not some crazy lineup of breweries. There aren't many 3 hour beer festivals charging $80. Even GABF tickets are less.

I actually have already purchased my ticket for sierra nevadas fest and didnt blink an eye in doing so. The initial lineup of breweries is absurd. My point it that, relatively speaking, this ticket price seems terribly out of line for the return on investment. Bubble> burst. As far as your comment on what 100 bucks will get you, I have dropped that on far more senseless shit than the things you have mentioned.

Please don't take this post as being a mine is bigger than yours sort of post, just stating that at some point you have to say no to things you enjoy. What they are initially offering at this festival, this is where I say no.

I paid $75 for a VIP ticket to Stone's 17th Anniversary last August... That was 7 hours (two 3 hour sessions with a VIP only session in between) of over a hundred breweries serving tons of goodies. Plus access to a rare beer tent where they cracked bottles of aged or pretty rare beers.

Just sayin'... I love Wicked Weed but I have to agree with everyone else. The line-up doesn't justify the price.

That said, I'm sure people will pay it. Just not me.

I'll add to this, $80 for a very well organized, all day beer event is nothing. I would gladly spend that for something at most breweries or cities. My issue is Wicked Weed really hasn't blown me away yet, I was only able to get one sour on tap when I went (out of the dozens they seem to brew, none were on) and it was awful, the other nine beers I had weren't bad but nothing great. The place is nice as shit but already way too popular for my tastes, standing elbow to elbow all night isn't my thing (on a Thursday no less). Not that this has any bearing on the event, but they haven't wowed me enough yet to pay $80 for three hours of my time. Atlanta's own Hotoberfest is that price, but it's six hours and TONS more beer.

All I would tell everyone is, just give it some time to mature. Rick only put out a few of the breweries that have already committed. I have had a chance to go to Denver Rare Beer and Raleigh Rare Beer and they have not disappointed. I've been more then impressed with the beer AND the food. Anybody who has dropped good cash on a mediocre festival and then spent a bunch of money at a mediocre food truck will see that this is a good deal. These guys know how to put on a good festival and are strict about what beer is served. There is still quite a while before the festival and the list will be great.
