I guess I'm curious to see what the level of snobbery is here on good ol' BA. Notice I said "buy it", not "drink it."

Excluding Labatt Blue (which has as core of 60something on BA), if I know a beer's score before buying it, I probably won't get a bottle if it's below a 75/100slash3.25/5. There are exceptions for experimental sort of beers where it's a "love it or hate it" type thing, though, but I won't buy So-So Average IPA from Mediocre Brewing Company if there's a wide consensus that it's just "so-so average."

I left out the "I don't usually look at scores before buying." option because I would figure that's the majority.

EDIT: I can't tell if people are voting <60 because they drink macros, or because they're substituting it for the "I don't look at scores" non-option. I'll guess mostly the latter.

Usually around 85 before I buy it, which could be why I have so many ratings over 4. Though Pilsners/Lagers tend to get lesser ratings due to style, so that's a different story.

You are correct; I don't look at score when buying...

I'm the same as Wisco, my general cut-off is 85 but I will dip below that on occasion if something strikes my fancy.

The only time I check is if there is some brewery I don't know or some foreign brewers I don't know. Otherwise, based on styles I like and brands I would try one bottle of anything.

Don't know, never check scores. Don't care what the others think.

I try not to be a score whore. I will admit that if I see something I haven't tried and it's rocking a 94 or up shelf talker, I'm probably more inclined to buy it over something of the same style w/o a score that I've also not tried. So I guess I am a score whore.

I usually look at reviews, but it's more to see other peoples tasting notes than the score itself.

There are always exceptions, since I by no means have a 'rule' for this, but my "wants list" is generally comprised of 85+ scores for those that I look up before hand.

I'm sure I have single bottles in my refrigerator that are in the 75+ category, but that's more of an outlier. I guess this makes me a snob.

I generally do not check scores before making purchases. I try beer that sounds good.

If the bottle is over 10 bucks i usually scout ba. Needs to be close to 90 for me to purchase

If buying a beer is based on a complete and total stranger's opinion, one you've never met and have no clue what his palate is, then you're buying beer for the wrong reasons.

If I am not seeking out a specific release or personal favorite, than I'm buying strictly on what intrigues me at the time. With that being said, I have sought out plenty of beers because of rave reviews but haven't poo-poo'd anything because of reviews.

Yeah I look at the score more as the cost rises. Though at some point i noticed a fault in that plan as well as rarity goes up so do the prices and what people say they feel about it.

Don't get wrapped up in scores and being a snob.

Plus, I don't trust any of you assholes with telling me what a good beer or isnt.

I don't check the scores before I buy. I might or might not buy based on the reputation of or my experience with other beers from a brewer. Sometimes if its a favorite style, e.g. any Old Ale that's new to me will be purchased. Price can be a factor as well. I rarely avoid a beer because of what someone else has said about it.

My answer is a big ol' "it just depends". Sometimes I'll look for specific beers over 90 to see what the hype/fuss is about (I do admit I search highly rated ones out for that reason). Other times I'll buy something Ive had and know I like no matter the score (which there are ones I like in the 80s and 70s). Other times I won't even look at the score but rather buy something I've never had from a brewery I like. And then finally, when I'm on my way to the golf course on a hot Texas summer day, I'm buying something like Bud Light or Shiner. Like most I'm an equal-opportunity-beer-drinker. #dontdiscriminate

Not a complete stranger's opinion. A large sampling of strangers' opinions. There's a difference. I'd rather trust 10,000 scores that say a beer is World Class than "wing it" and buy a beer from a new brewery that I have no information on, if they're the same price.

If I ever do look at a score beforehand, I'm checking the rAvg not the BA Score.

if i check before buying, which is rare, i usually read the review notes-- not the score. I follow a few people that have similar tastes and read their input.

that being said, price also plays in. i'm not going to buy a $25 beer without doing some homework.
