I suppose in any representative democracy where there will be crowds of people there will be politicians politicking? Shaking hands, kissing babies. Oh well!?! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Cheers!

They have the Mayor of Munich tap the first wooden keg on the opening Saturday. One year he did a crap job of it. It was a scandalous, almost cost him his job.

An interesting article, but I really have no idea how the title of it reflects the content.

Well, Bavaria, the rest of Germany and really all of Europe are tangled in a re-emergence of unoriginal and destructive political thinking. I think less about the effect on Oktoberfest, but do think more about where this trend will lead. Macron in France and Trudeau in Canada are heartening to me personally. It is happening here in America with a decent percentage of the populace in agreement..I still marvel at the disgusting display in my beloved Charlottesville. We shall see.........

There's always blowback from any far left or far right agenda. Here's the blowback for the far left Merkle leadership, and average people live mostly in the middle I'd suppose, and Germany's open arms to everyone has been a problem to say the least. They're tired of it and they're going to flip it the other way. It'll happen here too in reverse I suppose, the lunatic fringe has a fairly loud voice in both Germany and the US.

Last week there was an article about German traditionalists saying that Oktoberfest was being ruined by the busty foreigners dressing in low cut beermaid "porn" dresses - and now politicians. I'd put up with the politicians as long as the busty beermaids in porn dresses are still in attendance.

The CDU and Merkel are centre right, not far left.

I always thought it was the Italians or Aussies who ruined Oktoberfest, no doubt they think it's the British who do

Yeah, sure... but even by those standards I’m still scratching my head... or perhaps I’m still just too naive. It doesn’t help that BeerAdvocate reproduces the language due to their blanket convention of using an article title as a thread title.

Hmm. From what I gather the problems in Germany stem from the extremely liberal Merkle accepting in thousands of middle eastern refugees. And the resulting problems with assimilation, and rising crime. I'm confused how extremely liberal equals center right? The liberal part isn't my words they're from npr broadcasts.

I was visiting Carlsberg Brewery In Copenhagen in 1972 with a Canadian friend. We did the tour with the very generous beer and food offering. A few Aussies had caught up with us, and they were out of control. One guy puked all over the table and we had to haul him out. I told them he wasn't an American.

It also calls on ethnic Germans to have more children to prevent the eradication of the German people. "The preservation of one's own national people is a priority in politics and for every government," the party said in its manifesto for last year's federal election.

So Germany has Nazis again... We have a return of high waisted jeans.

Hanglow is correct. Merkel's party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has been Germany's main center-right party since its founding in 1945. Better to stick with subjects you know.

The SDP was the left party when I lived there, it seems some people never heard of Gerhard Schroeder.

Twenty years ago I went to Oktoberfest. The people from Munich said the worst were the Kiwis.

This is the problem when you listen to the radio with half an ear at work. But they were talking about the problems popping up in Germany right now and how's it's fracturing relations. Pro Merkle, anti Merkle, the problem with the massive in flow of middle eastern refugees. The Nazi salute making a comeback in kinda news in and by itself. I'm not a politico I just equated Germanys problems to the political polarization here, as simple liberal left vs the conservative Reps. Sounds like it's not that simple, and it's not simple here either I suppose, most of us are moderate either way, it's the extremes that make the news.

Spoiler alert: Nationalists and 'purity' maniacs ruin every country in which they exist. Doesn't matter if they hide behind a waving flag or a religious text, the only way to protect the things you love is to dispose of them like the trash they are. Give a hoot, don't pollute!

Since I don't have direct intel from towns and city folk living in Germany I can't really trust accuracy of the mega news networks and publications or even alt news for that matter as to what is really going on under Merkel regarding immigration and whether there are any material impacts to their country and culture. What I can say is that if I ever get the opportunity to visit Germany, I would much prefer to experience authentic German food, German beer and German culture on my trip and not curried goat and kabobs on every street corner. I'll save that for an Istanbul trip.

Agree, the title suggests that Oktoberfest is threatened by nationalist politics. That makes no sense at all. Nothing in the article suggests that thousands of skinheads are marching to Munich to start kicking in peoples heads with their Doc Martens. Just more spun up crap articles to scare people and stir up trouble that really doesn't exist.

Material impact to their country and culture? Immigration has indeed had an impact on German society, which is more diverse than ever. But rest assured, “authentic” German food and beer is widely available and not about to disappear. If you have never been to Germany, I’d back off from the assumptions about “curried goat and kabobs on every street corner.” (I’m wondering if you find the widespread existence of Mexican, Chinese, Thai, and Greek restaurants in the US to be an equally disturbing thing.) Appeals to an “authentic” German culture recall the destructive propaganda of the 1930s. If it’s a romanticized version of Germany that calls you, a trip to the Germany pavilion at Disney’s Epcot will suffice.

I could go off on this subject.......but............
But I will keep it short with this statement: I for the most part boycott German products and this includes German beer . Do I buy German beer? yes i do but really only Köstritzer Schwarzbier in any quantity, And every time i buy it I wonder if I should. I am like Walter P Chrysler on this subject......

After doing a little research, it looks like this isn't the first issue with unheathly nationalism in Germany. Wikipedia isn't always the most reliable source so I will have to do some more reading.

It is amazing that "We" as a people have such an uninformed notion of the peopling of modern Europe, not even to mention America. Migrations and diasporas are the standard for the pre-historical truth of all of the northern climes. This is all nothing new. There is just so much to say here, but an historical, weather sciences, and geologic perspective is necessary in learning human progress towards an historical record. People don't seem to like history.

No reason to, it's a bit intertwined but it's still has the ability to effect Octoberfest. That's is a big deal.

Rise of right-wing nationalism isn’t limited to Germany or even Europe. Turn on Fox News for 10 minutes & you’ll see it in the US.

And instead of causing problems at a cherished national beer festival, the ones here start problems with America’s most popular cherished pastime (the NFL)

You can find plenty of German food and beer. One of the German foods that is popular in parts is Curry Wurst, which originated in Berlin, and is chopped Franfurters covered in Ketchup and curry powder.

A cheap meal 20 years back was a Dönner Kabbap. Think of a Gyro made by Turks. Many Turks came to Germany as guest workers in factories in the 50s and 60. They stayed, and the Turks are the largest ethnic group.

A Thai, Italian, Vietnamese, or Indian restaurant can be a welcome change of pace after 10 days of traditional German food. Those last 2 were eaten in Berlin last month towards the end of the trip.
