Getting Tired of Bourbon Barrel Stouts?

I change up what I drink too much to get sick of anything.

 

I for one am getting sick of BA stouts being done poorly and what I mean by that is getting 3 months in a barrel, executing these 7-9% ABV BA stouts with very little barrel backing, or just something that doesn't integrate in with the base beer.

 

I totally agree! I see the base beer is 8.0 abv and the Barrel aged version is like 8.5 abv, to me something is wrong here. I think the barrel aging should add at least 2%,at the very least.

 

I like beer, why destroy it? If I want bourbon I'll grab a bottle of Turkey, if I want coffee I'll make espresso. My brother makes me try one of these every time he buys one. I rarely finish a glass.

Stop cherry picking and only drinking the "special" or "limited release" beers and drink something else and then you won't be tired of them.

 

You'll see once you try a couple good ones. You can't just throw bourbon into a beer either. Barrel-aging if done right is an art. You've got Toppling Goliath over there.

 

Some barrels are dry when used, so they would not add to the ABV.

 

Cue the crickets...

 

I feel like most BA Stouts aren't that great. Sometimes it's too much whiskey flavor, other times the base beer is not good to begin with. Our obsession with barrel aging has lead to much hype and inflation in the ratings, and now it's a mad dash to put out the next big-ass BA Stout, while other great styles are being overlooked. It all comes full circle though, as the more people spend $20 to $30 on one bottle of Stout, the more they realize it can be better spent elsewhere.

 

Likewise. I'm closing in on 50. If your counting Weight Watcher points (or even aware of what that is) you need a testosterone boost.

 

I've come around to this way of thinking. I really enjoy a barrel aged stout. I like big beers. The good ones are fantastic but there are a lot of really bad ones but they'll keep pumping them out as long as we keep buying them. I'm buying them less lately unless I know it's a really good beer.

 

BBA stouts all pretty much taste the same to me.........

 

That's unfortunate since most hops are harvested in the fall, exactly on the other side of the year.

 

So what is beer in your opinion? And I'm guessing anything that does not fit your criteria is not beer or has been "destroyed?" Humans have added flavor to beer since it's founding. What about hop, malt and yeast varieties? Is citra too fruity, Brett too funky, or toasted malts to chocolatey? What about salt in Gose that defines the style? I can't even imagine how boring your tastings might be.

 

Adding or Altering a ingredient to make a beer to achieve a style is completely different than using a bourbon barrel to make finished beer taste like bourbon. You could put Natty ice in a bourbon barrel and in a couple years you would have a beer that tastes like bourbon. If I wanted to taste bourbon I would attend a bourbon tasting.
