I'm expecting a child later this year. Besides stocking up on a 6-pack of Sierra Nevada Bigfoot each year (which I do already) what other ideas might fellow Beer Advocates recommend to begin creating a modest but enjoyable gift to be presented on his/her 21st birthday?

I put away a bunch of stuff for my daughter who was born last year, just to see how the bottles would hold up over 21 years: Cantillon Classic, Brooklyn Black Ops, Baller(first beer release trip my daughter went on), Abacus, Parabola, Life & Limb. I will also be doing a 21 year Bigfoot vert for her.

Tactical Nuclear Penguin or Sink the Bismark. Maybe 21 years would make them enjoyable?

I say save two of these. One as a gift and one to sell and pay for college.

I think this is a great idea in concept. In reality, think back to when most of you were turning 21 years old. What would you have done with a gift of a bunch of beer?

The newly 21 year old me would have downed most of the gift within the next week with little to no appreciation for what I was drinking. Now, I realize some of you were and are 22 year old beer experts that appreciate cellared beer. But let's be real. Most 21 year olds aren't. So unless you are 100% sure your child will have the will power and knowledge to appreciate what you're gifting him, I'd forgo the plan.

    Here are my two cents:

    1. Save one bottle of something. Just one. Crack it open and share it with your kid on his 21st. Forget about an entire cellar. It'll be wasted.

    2. Build up a cellars worth for him over the years, but only gift him parts of it over the time between his 21st and 30th birthdays. It'll be like a slow indoctrination to cellaring. Birthdays, holidays, graduations, first jobs etc. will serve as occasions to gift him more and more of the cellar. It'll become a tradition between you and your son. Now, that's a concept I could see playing out well.

Lambics. Cantillon Classic Gueuze, Lou Pepe Gueuze, 3F Gueuze, maybe a Kriek or two as well. I also would wait until past 21 to gift these. Maybe at a wedding or graduation or something, unless your child turns out to be into craft beer really early...

Whatever you want to drink 21 years from now, because the chance that your kid is going to be as into beer as you is probably lower than you think.

    First of all congratulations Darien!

A couple of bottles of gueuze from each available blender / producer would be a great gift that you would be able to share with your child in 21+ years (Lindemans, Boon, Cantillon, Drie Fonteinen, Tilquin, Hannsens, De Cam, Timmermans, etc...).

More traditionally you can go with some of the big trappist quads, old ale's or english barleywines (JW Lee's being #1 on that list).

Our Special Ale from Anchor (Magnums because why not?), Third Coast Old Ale, North Coast Old Stock, are all also solid ideas.

Will be interesting to watch this auxiliary cellar grow over the years.

    Cheers!
