I’m travelling from PA to Austin next week for SXSW. I would appreciate any recommendations for good beer bar/restaurants. I’ll be staying at the Embassy Suites – Downtown (Congress Ave & Riverside Drive).
I did some due diligence before posting this and I see that Ginger Man looks pretty good.
Also if anyone has any recommendations for good vegetarian restaurants, please let me know. You can BM me if you don’t want to clog up the site with non-beer related insights.
    Thanks!

If you like Indian food I definitely recommend the Whip In, which is not too far from where you're staying. If you like beer, which I assume you do  then I highly recommend it.

Come see me at Frank. 4th and Colorado. We have a decent Veg. menu and a good beer menu including all the Austin Beerworks stuff on tap. Are you flying? Any chance of brining anything to trade with?

Yes. Bring stuff to trade O_O.

I'd also recommend trying NXNW if you make it up north. The food and the beer is great.

If you want to stay near downtown - beer - Gingerman, zax, frank, love joys, easy tiger
Food - frank, chilantro trailer, el soy Luna, Franklin BBQ

I guess whip in really isn't too far from downtown either, I wouldn't try to walk there though.

Citywide - draught house, reds porch, Matt's el rancho, taco deli, one of the eighty million food trailers

Easy Tiger might be around you. It's on 6th, between the 35 feeder and Red River. Vegetarian smoked sausage, vegetarian sides and apps. At least 30 (GOOD) beers on draft plus 10 in bombers. Great outside patio seating, coffee & homemade pastries upstairs. Come see me! Like all the guys said, Whip In is a great place if you don't mind leaving the downtown area.

See the Jester King event post (for beer), sounds like a great day.

It's hard to find a joint in Austin that doesn't have a significant vegi/vegan portion of the menu. But previous posts are spot on for some of the best places in the area.

Gingerman is the closest in proximity and has a good selection, but there are better places outside of downtown. Whip In has some great vegan options and has a great selection, but can be pricey. Hopfields is just north of the UT campus and has a top notch selection, but their menu is French bar food (awesome)...not so vegan friendly. Love Draught House...the people are good, the bartenders honest with their opinions of the taps, and the manager always has some very good stuff on tap that he's brewing himself...but it's not downtown and in north Austin. The bar at Whole Foods on Lamar only has 6 taps, but they are usually seasonals and they have a good bottle selection that you can open and enjoy in the store. You can also take the metro rail up to the Crestview station which is literally footsteps away from Black Star...they have great food (not until after 4pm) and a very strong selection along with their own brews (usually at a BA selection is available).

I second the Jester King event. Those guys don't mess around with their surprise kegs. After unleashing the Cantillon keg at their anniversary party, I wouldn't doubt what these guys are up to. It's a great property as well in the hill country on a farm not far outside of the city (20 min from downtown)...hard to hate a place that has at least a 1/3 of their constructed space dedicated to their barrel aging room.
