So I'm sitting here drinking an Idle Hands Bourbon Barrel-Aged Triplication (Kappy's Barrel Select 03) and I'm totally blown away. This is the first beer that I've had from this brewery and looking at the reviews on their beers it seems that they are pretty well received, but this beer is friggin' outstanding! It is as good as Allagash Curieux, maybe better. Not too many examples of this hybrid style around, but I'm loving it. I actually think that the Bourbon Barrel treatment really works with the tripel style and brings out the notes of the Barrel better than a darker beer (usually an Imperial Stout)- vanillia. toasted coconut, Seville orange, barrel char as opposed to roasted notes in darkly roasted barely which in a way conflict in darker beers. I'm really wishing I had picked up multiple bottles of this.

Okay, now to my point! What beers from newer breweries are really making an impression with you lately and why?

One brewery that I have heard great things about is Oval Brewing. They're a small start-up company in Columbus, OH. In particular, they have a IIPA called ``Underdog IIPA'' that's supposed to be outstanding. I'm dying to get my hands on some of their products!

I really enjoyed Grey Sail Ale from Grey Sail. It's a Cream Ale that was damn tasty and I easily crushed them from the can on hot summer days these past few months.

For those in the Boston area, Jack's Abby is a fairly new brewery that has a number of high quality offerings from Hoponius Union to Smoke and Dagger, Red Tape or Kiwi Rising. I have nothing but good things to say about everything I have tried from this brewery.

Pretty much anything from Logsdon. I particularly like their Siezon Bretta and Cerasus.

I agree that Logsdon is making some very good beer. However, and to absolutely prove once and for all how superficial I can be,. . . .(and, yes, ....yes...I know all about the "book from its cover" thing....) am I the only one who really hates the labels on Lgosdon brews?!

It's obviously none of my business how they want to market and promote their beer but,. . . ..wow.....could the label be any more "50's Bavarian Boring Busch Gardens?" I'm all for conservative labels if that's what you like; but....really?

Yes, I agree their bottle labels are very uninspired. They are all so generic; if it wasn't for someone bringing a bottle to the last tasting I was at I'd probably still be ignoring them on the shelves.

Their Rye IPA (IPL, I mean) is terrific. Look for it. Very, very nice. They call it "R.I.P.L Effect". These guys seem to know what they're doing.

Three Heads Brewing is relatively new, but I seriously love their "The Kind" IPA. So fruity!

Elevation Beer Company in Colorado, only been open for 6 months, already sold as much beer as they expected to in 1 year. They're expanding soon and they're bringing one of their beers to the GABF Rare Beer/Pints for Prostates this fall. Jumping right in with the heavy hitters.
Anyway - their Signal De Botrange, a chardonnay barrel aged belgian ale is stunningly complex and wonderfully drinkable. Love the direction they're going.

Free Will Citra is a tasty and cheap pale that I turn to when I'm looking to session. On the other end of the spectrum, Neshaminy recently put out a Smores stout that is quite competitive with the heavy hitters. Not quite as good, but up there.

Before the Dawn black barleywine from Steel Toe brewing in MN. Aged in Templeton Rye barrels (which I happen to love). Absolutely outstanding. Looking forward to seeing how it ages...

For a local brewery, I'd go with Nantahala in NC. They're only a couple of years old and have the best IPAs in the area. There's also a brewery that's not even open yet called Wicked Weed that showed up to a beer festival recently with a handful of wild ales and other beers that blew away nearly every other brewery there. Let's hope they can keep the consistency up when they do open.

For a not-so-local brewery, my choice would be Hardywood Park in Richmond, VA. They've just now been open a year and have put out some amazing beers, from their pumpkin ale and gingerbread stout to a bourbon barrel aged quad and DIPA.

have you had a chance to try Loe's in Hickory?
Hardywood makes some excellent brews (maybe not the IPAs though...)

I've not had their beer before. I live in Asheville, so don't make it out to Hickory often. I would like to hit up OHB's taproom at some point, though, so I'll keep them in mind as well.
