AH/CW lacks compared to LEM. I really wish LEM was a year round beer.
I'm with you guys on this one. Of course, still a good beer but something happened. At first I thought it was my palate (you will get scorned really fast around here for not considering palate first) but now it seems some of you guys feel the same way too. Glad I only bought a 4 pack so far.
Really? I've never had AH/CW, but I found LEM a very average DIPA that tended to be on the sweet side and not a favorite of mine.
I can't speak to the comparisons with previous incarnations as Alchemy Hour, as this is the first year I've tried this offering. But I thought Chillwave was damn good. Not elite-in-the-style good, but a solid B+. It actually reminded me of Hopslam...without the outrageous price tag of course.
Everyone is certainly entitled to their personal tastes and opinions, but I would contend that anyone making a blanket dismissal of Great Lakes' portfolio is either: a) not actually familiar with the products, or: b) in an extreme minority that truly doesn't like their brews.
If its still 11.99/4 pk its actually right in line with hopslam prices.
Glad I'm not the only one. I remember loving this beer last year, and I'm just not getting the same feeling from it this year. Not sure if it's me changing or the beer, but either way, the disappointment is still there. Hopefully the next three get a bit better as I'm having difficulty getting past the sweetness and honey that I don't recall being as dominant last year.
Found some today for $10/4pack. Seems like a good price.
Something is different. I'm not sure in a good or bad way....(same thing I said about Hopslam tho.) Maybe my taste buds are burned out...
do you have to listen to washed out when you drink it?
man this stuff is good great lakes you have won me over.will be buying more of this.
I paid $8.99 for a 4-pack. Well under any Hopslam prices I've seen.
Got a case of hop slam for 60. Like I said, right in line w/ hopslam prices . We're also in the respective states where these are brewed so it'd make sense that you'd see cheaper chill wave and I'd see cheaper slam. Eh, anyways, cheers!
its 11.99 everywhere here in NC. sadly, I would take Chillwave over Hopslam (says the guy who grabbed another bottle of the Hopslam last night).
The problem is last year it was A ++. I second everything said here I was shocked at first by the booziness and that was the first beer I've ever had brewed with honey where I thought this has honey in it which is weird! HOWEVER, as stated above the more it sits the more I'm catching the fruitiness, I hope this continues.
I'd definitely buy more Hopslam if I saw prices in line with that around here. I'm sure the "local" aspect has quite a bit to do with it, but the case prices I've seen for Hopslam are about $20 higher than Chillwave.
Alchemy Hour was a way better name.
Youth Lagoon is also acceptable.
I'm more partial to Moss of Aura or perhaps some Neon Indian
I remember being blown away by this beer last year. Its still a good one this year, but im not sure if its me or there is something different. Maybe I have ingested to many IPA's this year, and my palate is worn out. I mean, after the release of Dirtwolf, Hop ranch, and Hop juju, I think I may just be worn out.
Had another one out of my case I bought last night.....it is not the same beer I don't remember it being so sweet, and where is the huge citrus flavors?!? Hugely disappointed in this beer. This is by no means a bad beer but it is not case-buying-worthy either at most I'd by a 4 pack of it next year. I was looking forward to this sooo much this year too. Sucks is a better beer by leaps and bounds and Dirtwolf, Hop Ranch, and Hop Juju is in another league.
Wow, around here most people feel completely opposite. At least those that I have talked to. I'd chose AH/CW 10 times over before LEM. But that's why Great Lakes puts out such a strong line up appealing to most beer drinkers. Cheers
I agree with everything you just said. I'm glad I didn't just go out and buy a case. I thought I would get a four pack first just to see if it was everything I thought it was going to be. Not a bad beer, not great either...
and yes, Hop Juju is just ridiculously good.
It would be interesting to ask the brewery if the recipe has changed and if it has, how so. I have no idea where to even direct the question. Anyone have connections to the brewery?
You Sir are much smarter than I
Hop JuJu is an astonishing beer and I'm still kicking myself for only buying 2 4s my beer store only got a case and I was there when they had all of it but one bottle, and as soon as it touched my lips 5 hours later I called and said I want the rest of it she said its gone....
I'm sure all of our palates have changed.... (this beer sucks dick this year, just admit it)
Patiently waiting here in Delaware. Looks like Cherry Hill received it's shipment, what about the Philly area?
picked some up last night in Allentown
I enjoyed it. But I didn't have last years version, so I'm not able to compare. I thought it had a unique flavor. In a good way.
Just had this last night. The name isn't my favorite but the beer is freaking awesome. Very candy like nose. God bless you Mosaic.
Thanks for the post! I was getting worried. A seasonal without a "does this beer taste different than last year" comment?
You've restored my faith in BAs.
Mind if I ask where at? Haven't seen it anywhere in the West Chester/Exton area yet...
Disappointed that it's not living up to last years batch, but I'm definitely going to have to pick up a 4-pack and decide for myself. It was just so damn delicious last year...
I think it was just as good as previous years. People like to piggyback on hate.
I would agree about the Porter, but Fat Head's Lagers are right up there with most any brewery... they get overlooked due to the IPAs they make.
Al's of Hampden/Pizza Boy. Might not be worth the drive to save a few bucks but their beer is worth the drive.
Agreed, plus Fat Heads has better QC than Great Lakes. Newbs don't remember the Diacetylmunder days of old.
From Great Lakes:
Thanks for your inquiry. Our ChillWave Double IPA is the same liquid gold that was available last year, just under a different name!
