I rinse with hot water. Where I get my refills, they rinse and sanitize it before refilling. Doesn't every place that fills Growlers do this?

I use the hot water and air dry method as well.
Made the mistake of using boiling water in a still cold growler and ended us with a broken Cape Cod growler.

I highly agree with star San. it is quite affordable
I wouldn't mind trying to use star San for glassware. Not to lose topic of OP.

I hear ya. One of the locals that I get my Growler fills at is a liquor store and they have that setup. It's a bit more difficult for a brewery or restaurant that fills Growlers to have the same setup but they should go the extra mile and do it.

most places just take it back and give you a clean one. If you self fill, just use a mild soap.
rinsing is the key if you ask me.

Soap that is not specifically made for cleaning glass will leave a residue

I've ran them in the dishwasher upside down WITHOUT detergent. Nice hot water bath and it works like a charm.

I just rinse my growlers with very hot water 5 times or so the moment they become empty. It only takes a minute so just rinse out the growler before beginning to sip on that last glass. I then let them air dry for several days and don't seal them up until they are completely dry. I never use soap and have never had any off flavors/scents/mold/issues.

I have no clue. Every brewery I buy from gives me a new sanitized growler and takes my old one in exchange.

I bought my first growler today. 64 ounces of Deschutes Inversion IPA goodness. My question is, how do I properly clean my growler when it is empty?

not sure about anyone else, but I just rinse mine a few times with hot water and leave it to dry - not much more needed than that IMO

As soon as it's empty rinse it out with plenty of hot water. As long as you don't let any residue dry up inside that's all you should need. Make sure to rinse around the threads on the opening as well.

Rinse with hot water, clean with a small amount of mild dish soap, rinse again, sanitize with starsan or similar, air dry. I use them for yeast prop/homebrewing, so ymmv.

Rinse thoroughly with very hot water; dry upside down so that all the water drips out; store with cap off.
