    Hi all,
Recently I've been buying all my bottled beer in NJ for selection and prices. I thought I would treat myself today to a Growler in my town of Warwick NY I get a growler of Knee Deep IPA and it's $19.99. I'm sort of shocked and look at the prices in this place and the mini growlers are all $12-13 with the big boys$20-$22.
Besides fresh beer, I thought the attraction of the growlers was the price?
    Did I miss something here?
    Enjoy the holiday weekend.

I get mine in NY, not too far from you, and pay from $10-12 for a 64 oz. growler (depending on the beer). Your local place may just be charging 'bar prices'.

Check out Cable Beverages, in Nanuet some time:

    Example #1:

Local bar has something on tap I want really bad that I can't find bottles of.
    $6.50 - 12oz pour at the establishment
    $22.00 - 64oz growler to go

    Example #2:

Local shop has La Folie on tap and bottles.
    $19.99 - 22oz bottle
    $22.00 - 64oz growler

    You do the math.

It kind of depends. I don't do growlers much and haven't done any at all for a few years. I have now found that what used to cost me 12 bucks now costs about $18. However, there is a nice Oatmeal stout at a brew pub nearby that is low in ABV (5.3) and I guess that's why its only $10. I think it's a good deal. But I don't see the point in spending $18 for 64 oz of beer which amounts to a five pack when I can get a six pack of the same beer for $12.

I guess the establishments thinks we're stupid and are thinking " well, it's $6 per 16 oz draft and you're getting 64 for $18." I know draft is better, which is basically what a growler is, but not that much different imo to justify the extra cash.

Bottom line. Growlers are just a convenience and a way to transport beer otherwise not available for transport...ie. six packs or bottles etc. It isn't meant to be a bargain.

I don't quite get this either. For a good portion of beer in my area, what is sold in 22oz bottles (of what I drink at least) is also sold in 4 or six packs, which are the better deal between 22 oz or even growlers.

Yeah, but you get an re-usable bottle ( usually ) and the taste is guaranteed to be different due to freshness ( hopefully ) than any bottling ( for better and for worse ).

Think of it more as a service than a product.

Sounds like growlers are all over the place. Just one example, Daisy Cutter at Half Acre costs $12 a growler, which is 64oz. THE SAME beer in a 4pk of 16oz (or 64oz) is $11, or maybe $12, I forget.

The same amount of beer, thats just as fresh, is cheaper in the more convenient packaging. I don't get their logic...

That said, you're an idiot if you buy Daisy Cutter in growlers when Space is so much better, and since they dont can it growlers are your only choice.

Brewpubs/breweries here in Columbia, MO range from $10-13 for a 64 oz growler fill. I have filled growlers for $7 or $8 at growler filling stores.

I fill a lot of growlers and find the prices vary greatly. Look at the websites for Stateline Liquors in Elkton, MD or Cable Beverage in Nanuet, NY and you will often see great beers for $5-$6 (32oz) or $10-$12 (64oz).
But nearby bars or places that serve the same beers will often charge 2-3 times that. The reason being their profit margin is much greater by selling 12 -16oz pours to their patrons, so selling cheap growlers doesn't make sense. Also growler fills from a sixtel will always be higher than those from a 1/2 keg because of the cost from the brewery.

I think here in New Hampshire and Vermont the attraction of growlers is for the one off beers that will never be bottled. Most all of the beers from Hills farmstead are only available in growler fills from the brewery. Does the price really matter if your getting a great beer?

Sometimes the price actually does matter.......because high $$ doesn't necessarily equate to great beer

    Cheers

Same in MA. Only reason to buy growlers is that's the only way to get the beer you want for the most part.

As far as price point goes, I have paid anywhere from $15 to $22 for growler fills in MA and I have been very satisfied with every purchase.

Hey folks thanks for all the great feedback and I get the feeling that I kinda got hosed. That's ok as we are also get a new craft beer store in town so maybe competition will drive down the prices..Good news is the beer is tasty, but not for the price! Slainte.

Around here it generally depends on the ABV of the beer - higher ABV usually equates to a higher price per growler. All things equal, a 64oz growler of an imperial stout or DIPA is going to be $3-4 bucks more than the same sized growler of say a pale ale, porter, pilsner, etc.

What's the name of the new store? I'll be in Warwick next month apple picking.

As for the pricing, growlers are generally high priced and are ridiculously high in bars because they extrapolate out the prices for their regular drafts. I love getting growlers but tend to only get beer that I can't normally get bottled, such as beer from Carton, Kane and Rushing Duck for the most part.

It's a Hudson Valley thing my man. Most places overprice beer and everything else. I was shocked at the prices here after moving from Denver. Just how it is here, unfortunate!

Some of my favorite local breweries here in NYC area have insane growler prices for some beers. $28 for 64 ounces, $20 for 32 ounces. I am just thankful to have awesome local beer so ignore the prices.

Well, you would have spent that on 2 bombers, and you got an extra 20oz of beer, so its not that bad.

My local has their fills at $8, but their big barleywine is 15. The fill stations around town are never more than 15.

I guess we are getting screwed around here. 32 oz is normally $10-$12 and 64 oz is $18-$24...
