Hair of the Dog is closing for good on June 26th. Most of us can't be there to help celebrate Alan Sprints' contributions towards making craft beer what it is today. But we can open up one or more of his creations, share our thoughts on the beer, and talk about HotD's remarkable 29 year run.

15 or so years ago when I was just beginning to learn about better beer year I got a mixed pack from my sister for Christmas. She had asked a knowledgeable friend to pick out some things he thought everyone should try. That was how I met Adam and Fred. For a long time those two and Doggie Claws were all I could find. Then I found out last year that they ship to PA. 3 orders later, I'm very glad I got to explore some of their unique barrel aged offerings. The online store will be open for some time after the brewery shutters if anyone is interested. There is a great deal on a mixed pack of 6 each Doggie Claws and Cherry Adam right now!

Hope to see a lot of you here starting on Friday the 24th. I'm ready!

Love it. I ordered a sampler a while back and still have probably half of the bottles. I'll open up one or two and toast with you all.

Great idea. It's probably been years since I've had any of their beers. There's an antique store... whoops, I meant beer store, by me that has some old bottles. If I have a chance to go there before the 24th, I'll pick one or two up. Does HotD date their bottles?

Adam and Fred have batch numbers which you can use to research bottling dates, the barrel aged stuff and Doggie Claws have the year printed on the label, and I'm not sure about their IPAs. Hope you find something good!

I haven't checked a can of blue dot in a while, but my recollection is that they do have a canning date on them. Unfortunately, all too frequently freshness is an issue when it comes cans of the green dot, blue dot and polka dot.

Freshness really shouldn't be an issue for their ba stuff. Typically, those beers only get better with age (up to a point). The only reason it's important to know the vintage of a particular ba HOTD beer relates to carbonation. Several vintages of Matt and Cherry Adam, for example, are still (uncarbonated). Both batches of Don are also still.

Maybe it's a good excuse to finally open this, a beer that whenever I rearrange the cellar and find it tucked inside a blue plastic bag (doesn't fit in any of my cellar beer boxes - that's it behind the wooden box of King & Barnes Millennium Ale), I think to myself, "When am I ever going to open this?"

That's right before I think, "Why did I ever buy this - 50 ounces of 10% golden ale - why haven't I drank it yet, and now I wonder what it cost and where I found it..."
Circa early 2000s is the best I can recall (I guess there's a chart somewhere?) and beside knowing HotD's rep and having corresponded with Fred Eckhardt and subscribed to (and even wrote one article for) his publications, I guess the novelty of find the beer on a NJ (I think?) shelf was enough. It'd probably be considered a bargain today.

Will there ever be a better time? All you’ll need is a simple wine bottle stopper to space it out over a few days… but with HotD’s carbonation idiosyncrasies, you might not even need that.

@jesskidden - Unless you are planning on hosting a beer tasting or bringing it to a party… but you’ve had 20ish years to do so with this beer and haven’t yet.

I found some HOTD at Target in San Fransisco a couple of years ago, a complete fluke. Fred, Adam, Doggie Claws - did not like any of them.

    Enjoy!

Sorry to hear they are closing though. Any insights as to why?

I've been to the brew pub twice and peeked in the windows of the previous brewery location when I couldn't find a time to meet Alan there (although he was willing) with my work schedule. I'm from PA but was in Portland off-and-on over the years to help at our plant there. Blue Dot was revolutionary for me and I first got it at a gas station(!) down the street from my work location. Definitely a favorite brewer. I've got some Fred, Adam and 2 different Doggie Claw years in my fridge. Sorry to see Alan retire but he's doing it in style. Glad to participate in this event.

I just placed an order for a sampler 12 pack and 12 bottles of Adam. It was seemless and I got 10% off for over $100, but christ on a cracker was shipping expensive! Good thing for my wallet this is literally the last time I will be able to do this.

Will probably stop by the tasting room one last time on Saturday and Sunday. I'm assuming the place will be packed (it was last weekend).

Alan has been there in the tasting room quite a bit of late. I'm assuming he'll be there on Saturday and Sunday as well.

I couldn't bring myself to do it because of the shipping price. I stared at my cart from yesterday until today..i had Adam once and it was ok but not something i would pay 30 dollars to to me.

That being said i am excited to crack this 2015 Putin i have on one of the tasting days. I grabbed two so i hope it was worth the price tag ( 21.99 plus CA tax [ 9.5%] )
