Yes I have heard it isn't a crazy rager (it is a quiet town to begin with) but has anyone been and recommend spending the day there? Is it better during the day or night? Thanks!

Small is an understatement. From what I remember, it was about 2-3 blocks barricaded downtown with one or two food areas and a stage for music. It's really not worth traveling there for it. I was in and out within an hour and felt it was kind of a waste of time. You'd probably be better off going to the brewery and hanging out there all afternoon.

October 10-12 will be a huge Oktoberfest party in downtown Milwaukee, so I'd recommend that over New Glarus if you want to party.

Speaking from someone who lives in New Glarus I will say that I have never seen more people in the Village than last year for Octoberfest weekend. AstraXtreme is right in that is only a few blocks barricaded off downtown, but there is a stage for music, New Glarus beer on tap, things for the kids to do, and there are 6-7 restaurants/bars within walking distance of the fest area. Friday night seems to be the busiest night as that is when Dan and Deb tap the keg, but there is stuff going on all weekend long. While I can't say whether or not you should come, I know I'll be there consuming mass quantities of Staghorn...

Jimmy are you allowed to bring a drink (transferred to a plastic cup of course) from say the Glarner Stube outside into the festival area? I know I have heard NG fests are open container. Girlfriend doesn't drink beer and I think wine is the only option so I know she will prefer a bloody mary while outside.

Any tips or must eats or dos? Or recommendations on where to park? I know they have some shuttles

I'm not sure about taking drinks outside purchased from one of the restaurants, but according to the Fest Facebook page they'll have Staghorn, Moon Man, Two Women and Spotted Cow on tap outside along with Wine, soda and water. It may depend on the establishment whether or not they will let you carry out.
You mentioned the Glarner Stube which is where I plan on being for dinner Friday evening. It will be busy as its right in the thick of the fest area, but it's worth it; I recommend the Bowl of Beef and the Cheese Curds for sure. Other places worth checking out within walking distance are Tofflers Bar and Grill - http://www.tofflers.com/dining_menu.htm and Sugar River Pizza. This list may not be current but they have an amazing beer list at Sugar River: https://foursquare.com/v/sugar-river-pizza/51859710498e26edf4222ebf - the pizza is good too.
http://swisstown.com/festivals-2014/ - according to the Village Website there is parking at the Schools and a shuttle – follow the signs when you come into town.
