These do not come in at the same cost as the year round and seasonal 12 packs. From one of the TC distributors, anyway. And I agree with the above, that 1984 version is spectacular.

Same price as other Schell's 12 packs at my local Haskell's, $13.99.

I hear the 1984 Saga is phenomenal as well.

First and last time, I promise.

I've tried 3 out of the 4. 1984 is by far the best out of those three. Still have to try the Roggen.

I wouldn't say "by far", but I will agree it is my favorite of all four. I really hope the 1984 makes it back into their rotation in some way.

Fair enough. Out of context I think they'd be harder to compare but having them together made it clear which I liked the best.

I got to say that after a number of months drinking IPA,s, DIPA,s, porters and stouts of all types these beers are a nice change- very refreshing and some pretty damn good beers!

This was an awesome 12 pack. Thanks to my brother for getting me this as it never showed up in northern Mn...

I did two separate blind taste tests with the beers and then had the four side by side one time knowing what was what. For me it was unanimous.

    1. 1984-I just like the maltier take on this version. This was clear cut all three times I did this.

    2. Mandarina Bavaria-I did not get as much citrus on this as I thought I would but it was tasty none-the-less..maybe a little tart if anything...

    3. Roggen Pils-I picked this one out right away but beyond the rye I really liked the hop bill.

    4. Current recipe-I don't hate this beer and in fact buy it from time to time but stacked side-by-side with these it finished fourth both times.

My request-Go back to the 1984 version for the regular pils if it makes sense business wise...

Nice write up ZAP. A couple of notes to your notes for more insight into the differences between the four.

First and most importantly, three different yeasts were used. I'm not sure if we had that info out there, but I've been asked a couple of times.

1984- Schell Lager yeast. Same yeast as used in Deer Brand. To me, the yeast signature is the most pronounced trait of this beer. 100% six row malt.

2014- Our other lager yeast, descendant of the Christian Schmidt strain. 100% two row, 100% Sterling Hops

Roggen- Same yeast , hop schedule, fermentation temp, original gravity, IBU as 2014. The only difference in fact is 15% rye malt and the hop varieties (fwiw, Emerald Rye only had 10% rye)

Mandarina- Czech lager yeast. A lot bigger than the other three, I think it was 6.5% abv. 10% Vienna malt, the rest 2-row.

Awesome information. Thanks for adding that all. Is the Schmidt strain from the old Schmidt (aka wildlife cans, etc). I really think they are all great beers. If I can get my hands on anymore of this I will be buying more but I hear rumors of a similar 12-pack involving one of my favorite beers of all-time Schell Hefe? I hope that is true as well.

Nope, Christian Schmidt was a PA brewery. Not the same as the one in St Paul.

Yeah, the Weizen series will be out later this summer.

So is the only difference between the 1984 Pils and Deer Brand the corn syrup and hops?

There isn't any 6-row in Deer Brand today. 2-row and corn syrup. 1984 is higher abv and IBU than Deer brand

These are all on at Binkies North for the Rochester crew. The 1984 was definitely my favorite.

Is the 2014 different and a permanent replacement for this beer?

It's the same beer. We had a hard time deciding what to put on the label to identify it (ie Current, Present, etc) so just settled with the year.

Is it still 5.3%? I seem to recall it being a bit lower than that. :grimacing:

This one really stood out for me, too. Like a gussied up, all-malt version of Deer Brand with more bitterness and more "breadiness." I can understand the changes made to the recipe over the years in keeping with the style, but dang, this one's good. :grinning:

Love all the details about these great beers. Wonder why the 12pk is coming in at $17 in the central Iowa market. So much more than the regular sixers ($7.99 here) and what you all seem to paying up in MN.
