This question may come off a little funny, and it may be better addressed to younger/more single BAs, but has beer ever affected your moves?

I find myself at a point where I want to move somewhere entirely new and have started looking at different regions of the U.S. I've been to a few different areas in the last few years as I'm still fairly young.

When I research new cities, a lot of it starts with the breweries I know from the region and whether or not I'd still be able to get some of the stuff I'm already familiar with. I moved across town not long ago with partial intention to move within blocks of a new taphouse that's planned here.

Is this simple alcoholism, or are there others among you who have had similar thoughts during a move? I'm certainly someone who believes in self-examination - so I can see how this may be seen as a problem in many circles.

People move, especially those with the freedom and luxury to do so, for a variety of reasons. And often these desired locations are based on desired and/or current leisure activities. For instance, many people move to the Pacific Northwest because they want regular access to hiking, skiing, snowboarding, boating, etc. I see no reason why good beer interest and the leisure/hobby activities that coincide with it shouldn't be a justifiable reason to move to any particular locale.

If beer is your hobby, and a large part of your life, I dont think that it is wrong for it to be factored into where you might want to ultimately live. Would we hold it against someone who enjoys skiing a lot if they moved to Utah?

I feel like a lot of the best beer is coming from the midwest now.

Not personally, and I don't see it really as a problem unless that's the only thing going through your head while picking a spot. I live in a great beer area, but I also work in the food service industry, so the bigger draw for moving to my area was to be closer to more job opportunities than I had previously. Being walking distance to three great beer bars and a few minutes from the alchemist was CERTAINLY a bonus, but if I had a job set up somewhere else in the state (even *gasp* southern VT!) with affordable, quality housing, I'd have done that instead. However, if you're young, single, and your finances are straight, I say move wherever you want to!

I went on exchange to Bamberg, Germany, through my university for a year. Came back to the US just long enough to complete my degree before I headed straight back to Bamberg. And, yes -- with around 380 breweries within an hour's radius -- one reason was the beer.

I'd imagine Germany has that kind of pull on a lot of people.

I moved from Florida to San Francisco for beer. I though SF would be a "centralized" location. I had a obsessive love for DIPA's and Ales since it's a few hours from Russian River, SoCal breweries and Oregon. I never drove up to Oregon and Los Angeles and Orange County are pretty far from SF. I now live in Orange county where the variety is huge. Beer was my primary concern when I made the choice to move. Now I feel like I do live in the middle of great breweries and restaurants. San Diego, Kern, LA, all is a drive away. I don't see myself moving for a while either.

Love the happy ending on that story. San Diego is obviously on a short watch list for me.

As I creep closer to the age when many people retire, I have begun to consider moving out of the northeast to somewhere a little cheaper to live. And of those places, I have considered and checked the availability of craft beer. But since I have no immediate plans to retire, I'm hoping that the places that are most desirable to me get better craft beer availibility.

Job market out here is really tough. Don't move unless you're employed beforehand.

When I moved to the PNW over 12 years ago, beer was a big factor. Not THE factor, but it played a sizable role.

i moved across town to be closer to my job, which is running a beer bar, so I guess in that sense, yes.
