It's interesting that you mention a reaction to Unibroue, while our reactions differ I'm wondering if it's the same trigger. I can't really drink any of the Unibroue offerings and don't came across this problem very often. Only with very specific brews. Of all the brews I've listed on BA I've only perhaps had the reaction 10-20 times.

My reaction occurs at the first few sips and I really mean sips of a beer my face will become very red and itchy it happens almost instantly and at most takes 2-3 minutes to develop. Most recently this occurred when trying to drink a Cream Ale from the Ashton Brewing Co.

I don't mean to, and hopefully don't, derail your thread but perhaps we could find a common solution!

I take it you're on medication for your heartburn then? I've got acid reflux and a hiatal hernia, so a nice double whammy. The prescribed pills, Pantoprazole Oral, from my GP have helped alleviate things for the past 7 years. It means I can still drink red wine, high alcohol beers and sours without too many issues.

i also have reflux and a hiatal hernia....been on 20mg omeprazole for 10 or so years. red wine and most belgians give me insta-burn. but spicy chili beers, high alcohol beers, and sours don't really bother me much.

I have never got heartburn from beer. I do, on occasion, get the squirts from certain beers. Most notably, Newcastle Brown Ale.

    to reanimate this thread-

I have a nice Fin du Monunderwear account.
Backstory: I have sever lifelong heartburn. Despite this, I drink all beer styles unwaveringly. Also- I've had fin du monde countless times.

All of that being said, I recently came into possession of a 4-pk of FDM 341ml bottles. I had one. great. The second one I had, I poured into a snifter, except the end (lees), which I usually drain pour. I decided to pour them into a shot glass and shoot it. The taste was fine. Just like any other yeasty bottom of a beer. However, the miasmic chaos that followed in my bowels was a force to reckon with. That night, I had a bumbling grumbling bubbling gut. Gas for the whole family. The next morning I unleashed liquid hell on my porcelain throne. For the next four days the lees worked themselves through my body, cleaning out my colon like a natural laxative. I was given only about 30 second warning intervals before each purge. And the air that flowed out from me was enough to kill a small 3rd world nation. Terrible terrible things. But I sure learned my lesson, and won't be downing the yeast from any Unibroue beers, Tripples, and especially Fin du Monde.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

I am sorry to those in this thread who experience discomfort from beer. No pun intended, but that is a real bummer.

    Was it from a bottle?

Tasted Maudite ,from Unibroue, on tap and it just tasted like pool water. Was super disappointed, not sure if tap had left over sanitizer or something but I don't want to find out again.

Do most Belgian styles cause problems....they do have a live yeast strain....another question, do you mix the yeast in and do you have trouble with home brews that have a yeast layer that has not been filtered out?

OP, I have had the same experience with La Fin Du Monde and Tres Pistoles. Wicked bad heartburn and indigestion. I also have this problem with hoppy Belgians; Orval, in particular. I think it might have to do with the yeast used and the bottle conditioning. It's really active beer.
