I followed these guys on social media through their build out and was excited to check them out back when they opened only to be extremely disappointed with the beer. Food was awesome but beer was like bad home brew. I tried it twice and never went back...fast forward to present day...I hear they have new brewers and I have a beer nerd buddy in town for beer camp. We cozy up to the bar and I order the Cloud 9 IIPA...take a sniff...wow..first sip..holy hop bomb, this is freakin great. We work our way through a flight of all the rest of their various APAs and Saisons and each one is well made and legit. I grabbed a growler out of the back of the car and took home 64oz of Cloud 9. (Stefan the bartender is good people btw) Later that evening, 4 others enjoyed it and agreed it would give these green cans we all enjoy a run for the money. Really big, hoppy, fruity, cat pee (but in a good way:slight_smile:

I know their are others out there like me, go back and give them a second chance. The food is still creative and courageous but the beers have moved them way up my list and now a must visit when taking friends on a beer tour.

    Cheers!

    -Wolfe

I heard so many people say that Cloud 9 was among their favorite beers at the festival yesterday, and kept meaning to get over to try it but time got away from me. I liked their DZL DIPA, so I look forward to trying this. Might not be the best name, though, since Olde Hickory had an On Cloud Nine Session IPA not all that long ago.

Glad to hear this. I thought the same thing first time I went there over a year ago. Haven't been back since the new brewers have been there. Will have to stop by next time I'm around there.

Embarrassed to say I have never been there. I will rectify that soon.

I had a similar bad experience there but it was no service - I went right past their booth at camp. Only one chance for a first impression...

I have been there two or three times in the last couple of months now, and really have enjoyed all the beers they have had on. It's always something different, and the food is top notch. I much rather visit with Heist than the guys down the street *ahemNoDaahem* if I only have time for one brewery stop.

Yeah I went back for the first time in a long time for beer (I had been back before this but drank mixed drinks instead) in March after meeting the new head brewer and hearing what he was doing to fix the problems and I was very pleased with the change that I noticed in quality. Eric has been doing a great job over there and I hope that it continues.

I was pleasantly surprised by this one at the festival. Look forward to trying more of their new stuff.

Are you able to get their beer anywhere other then the brewery?

I have seen them on draft at a couple of growler shop/bars very occasionally - I believe that the shops have picked it up directly from the brewery themselves, so no distro.

I visited Heist over the New Years holiday in my beercation with the girlfriend. I will be honest, I thought the beer was pretty good but it came in no higher than third that weekend for me(Wooden Robot was first hands down). I thought the location was pretty awesome but it didn't seem like a traditional location for a brewery. The vibe I got was that it was a restaurant that also happened to brew beer. Maybe it was the fact that they had a full service bar that threw me off since most breweries don't serve liquor.

Suffice it to say since then I completed a trade for BA Cataclysm which was awesome and I'm now hearing that they are brewing out of this world IPAs. Suffice it to say I'm definitely going to make it up there again to check out the new stuff.

Their IPAs are probably the best in the state right now, and can compete with all the NE IPAs and that isn't hyperbole....Heist is doing great things and I can't wait for what is to come...

Heist is making arguably the best IPA's in the country. Along with that, their stout program is insanely good as well. Taking home gold with their delicious English Mild is no small accomplishment either. NC has some incredible breweries but Heist has become my favorite in the last year.

Agree with the praise for Heist. Have had All is Ripe, Reformed, and CitraQuench'l, all sporting the hazy look and bursting with flavor. Blurred is the Word on its way to me now and can't wait to try it too.

Blurred is the bomb, had it on tap last month, but it's a step below the Veil's ipas. Haven't had Citraquential, so can't comment. You cackalacky boys need to get some RVA goodness!

I'd take Citraquinch or Blurred over any of the Veil beers I've had so far (double Crucial, double Shredder, regular Crucial, regular Shredder, Dirt Nap and Young Lions being the ones I've had).

Best in the country? I feel like there are many from NE that would love to argue that one. Still looking forward to stopping back in and trying these juicy IPAs.
