So, Hellshire 1 is a year old. For those of you whom have opened a bottle, has there been any improvement? Or is it still hot garbage?

I wouldn't say it's "hot garbage", but it's definitely still a bit hot....and extreeeeeeemely woody.

Had one a month or so ago and still felt that it needed more time.

Did you try it fresh as well? I recall it being vegetal and the barrel characteristics were muddled/reminded me of cheap whiskey. I'm hoping for improvement on either of those things.

I did try it relatively fresh (i.e. ~1 month after release). I don't recall picking up anything vegetal, but it certainly was heavy on the booze. Though, I'm often fond of BA barleywines that are big in the barrel department....so I'm probably in the minority of those who have actually enjoyed it to some degree.

I had one about a month or so ago and it was horrific. Tasted like an ash tray with woodchips was dumped into my beer. Possibly the worst beer of the year for me so far. There were 4 of us and no one could finish a small pour.

I had a few bottles, one i opened at Dan's place that one time with you, and i drank another alone while not watching the superbowl.

The body of my notes from the Superbowl bottle:

"The aroma has some positive flavors incorporated, quite a bit of nice caramel, some light barrel notes are evident, but there is something really bad in here, that smells partly like steamed vegetables/cabbage and partly like summit hops. I cant figure that out.
The flavors have all the same notes as the aroma, but with more rough alcohol on top, creating a bigger mess. Some rye like spice notes going on, caramel, and damp wood, a bit musty. "

    Rated it a 2.13.

This is what I'm afraid of. On the other hand, the ol' tasting group has talked about doing a "Swillfest" and a Hellshire 1 could easily be the centerpiece.

Absolutely lol. We opened an 86 jw lees before the hellshire and the jw was super oxidized and tasted like someone stored it on a window sill for 20 years and it was still better than the hellshire.

    Bad, yes.
Centerpiece of swillfest, far from likely.
