I need your help Advocates. My first batch of beer needs a great name. Something seriously funny and clever would be perfect. For example: Liquid Fence. Excavator Double IPA. and so on. When the best name comes up, that's the beer style I'll do my best to make...even if it is whacko. Let's have fun! Cheers!

I have way too many, sir. But they are being held for potential future projects. I can't give them up. I'm sure you have some good ideas in your head.

Do you have the chilling equipment in order to ferment a lager? if so, how about Gut Czech Pilsner? Not knowing your brewing skills, it might be a tongue-in-cheek appropriate name to use for a first-brewed batch (although I'll give you a vote of confidence only because you're hanging out in this forum).

I'll just find the coolest darkest tucked away spot at home and cover it. That's all I can do for now. Thinking about building a low table for stuff so it's not on the floor. When I go get ingredients I'm sure I'll get a lot of tips! Cheers!

Don't give up on using the floor; sometimes it gives you just that 2-3 degrees of a lower temp that can make a difference in having a good fermentation temp, thus reducing the possibility of unwanted esters in your beer.

Thank you! Good to know. My reasoning for "off the floor" is cause of in-floor heating throughout the basement slab. I never wear shoes all winter! It could present problems for brewing. However, one room has a dark corner with 2 cold walls. I'm eyeing that. Cheers!

How about batch #1? Start numbering them and when you can brew a great beer then you can name it. There is no one and done.

I agree that it should be named "#1". My grandfather gave me a cast iron capper he had used to bottle fruit wines during prohibition. In high school I used it for root beer bottlings. A few years later, in 1970, my old roommate and I dusted it off, oiled the gears, found a winemaker's supply store that stocked malt extract and compressed hops, and made some homebrew. We lived in an unairconditioned San Diego (Pacific Beach) apartment with hot water in the slab -- no cool fermentation for us then! I was a malt extract brewer for about 20 years. I was in a homebrew club in the early 80s. Our meetings were attended by at most a dozen members, at least one of whom made fine all-grain beers.
I did name one brew " -- "Birthday Beer". I was bottling that 5 gallon batch on April 29, 1984, when my wife yelled that we had to get to the hospital for the birth of our second child. I did finish bottling the beer, and we did get to the hospital -- but barely in time. The doctor didn't arrive until after the birth though.

Great story! You're quite obviously a well seasoned homebrewer. Actually the 1st batch of HB I made with a buddy was in 1996. It was successful (our 2nd attempt failed from contamination) and we sold the recipe to a friend who was brewing for a restaurant chain called 'The Green Mill'. It was a smoked Vienna Lager. Some ingredients came from the old James Page brewery and others from a store called 'Brew & Grow'. We used choco malts which we roasted highly, Whitbread yeast packet, Wright's Liquid Smoke and Cascade hops...and I forget the rest. I began to travel a lot soon after. I look frwd to eventually having time to brew! Cheers friend!

So, are you naming your first solo batch, or your first joint-venture batch (smoked Vienna Lager)? I'm guessing it's the former......maybe Batch # 1.5?

ETA: Gotta say though, Batchy McBatchface would be hard to forget. I've laughed more than once reading that.
