I got a six pack of fresh Sculpin recently, as it just finally came to Miami.
Don't get me wrong, it is really tasty. But with the reviews it gets, I was expecting the best IPA (excluding DIPAs) I have ever tasted, and it simply isn't. There are a few I would rank higher.
Also, it costs $14.99 for a sixer. Seriously?

I was expecting a ton out of hopslam looking at everyone trying to trade for it and I wasnt impressed it was good, not great. I can name at least 8-10 IPAs/DIPAs I'd drink over it anyday.

For me it's Zombie Dust. Smelled great, but had a strong overtone of grassiness in the taste that baffled me.

Awesome IPA, but not deserving of the hype I have seen here.

This is of course not to say I didn't I enjoy it. I very much did. It just didn't blow me away as I was somewhat expecting. Folks may think that's why it underwhelmed me in the first place (because I was expecting a lot of it). However, I was expecting a lot of Gandhi Bot, Ruination 10th Anniversary and of Heady and all of those delivered.

Just back from a trip to VT. The Heady Topper sampled at the brewery was excellent. Could not find any for purchase on the weekend. Hill Farmstead Double Galaxy and Lawson's Finest Liquids Chinooker'd were just as good. Tried Old Rasputin on tap in Montpelier. It was WAY better than in the bottle. Most underwhelming for me would be North Coast Old Rasputin. (bottle only) Too each his own!

I don't even put Heady Topper in my top 5 DIPA's. I've had it twice, and was not impressed. It is still a solid DIPA, but not nearly worth the hype.

Madruga Obscura. While not hyped per se, it has some great reviews. I just wish that I had read them beforehand. I expected a barrel aged Russian Imperial Stout. What I got was a sour ale. I don't like sour ales. Why the bottle's tasting notes don't include any heads up to its sour nature is beyond me. It mentions that it's, "Brimming of roasted malts and bitter hops", but no mention of the sour. Bad labeling job. And very disappointing if you're looking for a baltic porter.

Nugget Nectar. It's good and I'm sure I'll buy a 6 pack or two when I see it, but I don't get people hoarding it and counting down the days til it arrives. To me it's sort of bland and not really hoppy or bitter.

Pliny. Had it and it was very good, but again I don't get the insane craziness that some people go to to get their hands on this beer. Plenty other DIPA's readily available by me that are just as good or better.

Palate Wrecker. I enjoy stuff from Green Flash and this was very good, but I was expecting more. My palate wasn't wrecked enough.

On one hand I agree that mentioning "sour" on the label would be helpful.
On another hand, JP sours everything they make so you could have assumed.

I'd go with Rochefort 8. Love 10 and 12, but 8 was way too roasty for me.

Also- anything Magic Hat... Not impressed after the first 5 or 6 beers I've tried.
