Pliny was first brewed in 2000. But you're correct in that Vinny had brewed up the first modern-day DIPA at Blind Pig in 1994.

I had all 3 Westy's while living in Europe, while the 6, and 8 blew away all other brews in their respective categories...the 12 did not.I would take a St. Bernardus abt 12 or Rochefort 10 over it any day

I would say BCBS but thats really not fair because I'm not a fan of bourbon. I do love me some quads and the one I felt did not live up to its rating is Pannepot Grand Reserva. It tasted off to me.

Unibroue. Canadian whiskey and bacon, and Neil Young is allright. I'd rather drink Labatt , Molson and Moosehead than that faux Belgian krapp.

That's not the point. The point is that it's got 100 BA score and 100 from the brothers, so it should be the best of the best. Saying it's a "classic" is a cop-out. Knuckle Sandwich is better. Lagunitas Sucks is better. Heady Topper is better. Maharaja is better. And yet none of those is rated as high as Pliny. It's balanced? Ok there are a TON of very well-balanced beers out there, but no one is proclaiming them the best in their category just because they're balanced

Better is a relative term when it comes to beer. It might just mean that you don't share the popular opinion.

I think Pliny is an outstanding beer, and worthy of it's ratings. You don't. Personal ratings are not fact, they're just that. Personal.

Guinness when I had it three years ago. I did a drainbrew on half and haven't done that since Pete's wickedly bad brew. I would probably like it or tolerate more now with the porters and stouts i've had since then but Stouts are not my preference.

in regards to Stone I always have it on tap when I'm in the bars and restaurants out in San Diego and it's always fresh and good. I am not a huge hop head, but it's the specialty out there.

I'm not saying that it's not a great beer, just that it's not worthy of the ridiculously high praise it gets. It's something I would buy consistently if I could get it fresh, but never once has it tasted like a "best DIPA in the world", which is what it's rated and what most people consider it to be.

I would have to say 3 Floyds Baller Stout. I loved the concept and this idea to celebrate the anniversary, but it just didn't seem to live up to the occasion. Maybe after a little age.

Elder, all I have tried from great lakes, stone RIS, oak Yeti, Stormking(really disappointing) others I have blocked from my mind.

I still have brooklyn chocolate I picked up, Bitches Brew, Chokolat to try.

I thought White Rajah was better than I was expecting, as was Columbus IPA.

    Enjoy

That's a nonsensical term "best IIPA" in the world. If it is to you then it is, if its not, then its not. Why are people so caught up by a number.
To someone Corona is the best beer in the world, and that's valid - its subjective.
All of the beers you mentioned in your response are well made very tasty beers, but to say that one is better than another simply because one rates higher on a website, whose "judges" are not judges is short sighted. If you think its better, then it is, nevermind what the score says.

Um, the whole point of this thread is to name "Highly Acclaimed Beers that Underwhelmed You", so that's what I'm doing. Pliny is the most highly acclaimed DIPA on this site. Do you need me to elaborate any more? The point of the thread is not about my tastes vs someone else's tastes

The big three for me were
    CBS
    KTG
    DDG

All three letter acronyms, all good, but not in any way great beers. I can easily think of three beers in the respective "styles" that are much better, and much easier to obtain
    CBS (ba coffee stout)< KBS
    KTG (RIS) << Expedition STout
DDG (3 year blended sour)<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Cantillon Classic Gueuze

Yeah... I guess it all depends on the classification. Founder's Devil Dancer, which is deemed a Triple IPA on the label itself, is only listed as a Double IPA on this site. So you may be right, depending on whether or not PtY is "technically" a DIPA or TIPA.

BTW, even though Devil Dancer isn't highly acclaimed or anything, it still has a reasonably high rating on BA (~3.9) and I don't understand it. DD is probably one of the only two beers I'd ever pass on by Founders (the other being Cerise - tasty, but too sweet and un-beer like). I thought DD was incredibly unbalanced, unnecessarily bitter and overpowered with nasty malt and hot alcohol.

When beers, or anything really, carry such a high regard, most times they will dissapoint relative to perceived status. Are they supposed to 'take us to our happy place' or are we simply to enjoy them for what they are (gratuitous Happy Gilmore reference)?
I can recall the first time I had Pliny, HT and others. Kind of expected fireworks or angels singing based on all of the praise. Didn't happen. But ya know what, they were great and I would be happy to have them again.

...and Pliny is a fantastic IIPA - and if you dont think so then you dont think so.
My point was BA should not be the be all of highly rated beer, ppl on here are not professional judges, to say what is and what is not highly rated. We know people preception of a beer, hype around a beer and rarity (whale status) of a beer has a huge impact on the score given.
For example - In my opinion id put double jack right up there with pliny, but its way down on the list, why, i think because its readily available where FW distributes, you can walk in and get it and no one shits them selves to say oh i just scored a case of double jack.

The magical BA score is just a bunch of people drinking beer and saying what they think, 2700 people have reviewed pliny and think its good, does that mean its the best -- who knows -- what is the best? its what u think it is.
What you know is that pliny offers what people like flavor wise.

I think a better question would be how many GABF medal winners didn't live up to the medal status, at least there, you have control, you have professional judges, blinded etc.

So there you can say look double jack has won a silver and a bronze in 2 consecutive years, does it live up to it.

To say because BA deems a highly acclaimed, does not hold a lot of sway with me.
