Lactose doesn't need to be declared on packaging per the TTB. Soooooo this is a very possible scenario.

Huh. That's surprising considering the percentage of people who have lactose intolerance isn't de minimis.

The PPM or whatever of lactose in beer doesn't reach the lactose found in dairy products so they should not cause harm to people who are lactose intolerant.

It's not a large amount of lactose
It adds unfermentable sugar to the beer. Anything that doesn't ferment out is going to give mouthfeel.

Thanks for the info. I just found it odd that it tasted like lactose but, they don't list it on the can of their NEIPAs, whereas they do list lactose on the cans of their milkshake IPAs....I like consistency.

'Should not' sounds comforting. And as mentioned above, they mention it on their milkshake beers so they know it can be done. Some consistency would be nice.

In a milkshake beer the high amount of lactose is there to purposefully make the beer thick with 2 c's thick. If you're adding a small amount to boost mouthfeel I don't see why that has to be on the can/label. Should every barrel aged stout say "contains Dextrose"?

Really wonder what the calories/carb grams are like on these milkshake IPAs and pastry stouts

Gotta be near 300 calories a 16oz can.

Well, if you ask me, I'd like all ingredients to be shared either on the label or on a brewery's website at a minimum. I'm a proponent for transparency but that's another discussion perhaps. Can people be intolerant to dextrose? I don't know

Dextrose is the first to ferment out....Lactose does not. I would compare it to putting cinnamon or vanilla in a beer without stating they are in there.

I'm the one saying it, but everyone is thinking it... this is definitely Mikerphone's fault.

And hopefully P3 will fix the issue with HB beers.

Where does it say lactose on their milkshake IPA's? I don't have one in front of me but seem to remember someone else complaining that they didn't even list lactose on their milkshake cans.

I'd say 300 is probably a good minimum estimate. I found this old post...

"Two things determine calories. Alcohol and carbohydrates. The former contributes to the majority of the total caloric value of an alcoholic beverage (well, except some mixed drinks).

Most of these IPAs, especially the really popular ones, are in the 7 - 8% range, and are in 16 oz. cans. No matter how you slice it, this will will be >300 calories for that single can.

The other contributor, carbohydrates, will be determined by well-attenuated the beer is. A dryer beer will have less carbs than a sweeter beer like a milk stout or brown ale.

It's a good question though, and one that can be answered if you have the original gravity of the beer."

Given the lactose it's probably 300 at minimum.
