How does Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout Age??

    I just got hold of a 4-pack of 2010 winter release Black chocolate stout from Brooklyn Brewery from my favorite beer store. Does it age well? Are two years worth it? Or should i have bought 2011(which the store had) or the latest release?

    I was a little apprehensive buying it as i thought my store guy was pushing it. Nice to hear that. I just tried that and it was really good. This means i got a really good deal at 9.99 for a 4-pack. You made my day. I got to trust my beer guy more.

    In my experience, the booze and roast subside and the dark fruits are thus emphasized more. It's almost Baltic porter-like, to me.

    I have read mixed results. Some say it ages very very well. Others say flavors fade over time. I had one recently that had about a year on it and I remembered it being a bit better when fresh. Then I had a fresh bottle, and thought the chocolate was more pronounced. Matter of opinion, perhaps.

    With time.

    Personally, not one that I felt improved after a year of cellaring.

    I did not enjoy the 2011 bottle I had about a month ago. I'm giving my 2010 another month or two. Then I'm popping that sucker open

    I'm aging two 2012's now. Hopefully next year at this time it'll be a little less boozy. Who knows, maybe I'm gonna have to age it for two years like luisc123.

    It ages extremely well. I bet those 2010 suckers are drinking amazing right about now.. for me it's always too hot when fresh..

    It improves alot in just 8-12 months too, in my opinion. Last year's vintage should be drinking very well right about now too..

    In terms of the overall balance, the best years are great right out of the gate, and others are too hot and do need some aging. The thing is, aging never hurts this beer no matter where it starts- it definitely smooths out the rough edges on the hops and lets the malt character shine through. I do enjoy the hops when it's fresh, but there definitely is a chocolate pudding quality underneath them (from the first-runnings technique) that only gets more prominent as it ages.

    2011 was a well balanced year, and it still impresses. I also liked 2010, but haven't had it with some time on it- in any event, the worst you can say about it is that the hop attack has dimished, but the beer does have other facets that will make it worth while.

    I love it hot out the gate! If you got the money put a few aside. Yep, chocalate and hops are pronounced right now. Picking up for $7 a 4 pk. Sure beats Ten-Fidy @ $15 a 4pk. You do the math :astonished:.

    It ages with great difficulty, as you'll want to drink it right away. Love the stuff. I have had a 2 year old BBCS and it is less boozy. Not vastly improved, but certainly not worse than fresh. Good brew for aging.

    i picked up a 4 pack of 2011 at the store the other day and didnt even know it was last years until i drank like 3 of them lol. i found it to be very tasty. im gonna pick up this years soon to do a side by side.

    I AM new to this, but that may be beneficial to this question as I have no preconceived notions or ideas. Last week I did a side by side taste of a fresh chocolate stout and one that had been cellared for a year. The fresh bottle was no doubt very good, in fact I can't wait to get more. But the cellared bottle...Good Lord...it was so rich and buttery, it was amazing! The alcohol was less "in your face" and you could really appreciate the other flavors in the brew. It was genuinely like a different beer.

    I prefer to have a year of age on it versus fresh. It was much smoother and not so hot after a year. I plan on picking up a few packs to age for next year.
