How many beers do you drink per day? Y'all ever take a break?

Just drinking NA beers this month. It would be great if they didn't suck

Partially, yes. My mind worked like this:
    • I haven't had any all week so I can have a little extra if I want to.
    • If I wasn't in the mood I would still feel like I should have a drink because if I didn't I would have to wait until the next weekend.
    • Due to my work schedule I could drink without having to worry as much about my next day, wasn't the same during the week.
    • Social events Fri night-Sun.
I do not think the same anymore but it was easy to almost subconsciously slip into the above way of thinking.

Figured something like that cause I can definitely resonate with those first two points. I have a problem overthinking things usually.

You should have done dry-February like I did, fewer days! I know what you mean about the NA's, I tried a bunch and most were missing more than alcohol. I did like the Guinness 0.0. It's great with shots too.

I laid down liquor in 2003, having drank (drunk?) a river of Wild Turkey dry.
My beer weapon of choice is Big Stouts and high ABV IPAs, asserting that a couple a day, mostly weekends, is better than knocking down 6 packs of ‘little’ beers.,.

Always seeking balance, I’m currently doing a 30 day mind/body reset (not the Aaron Rodgers method), as I do yearly.
I walk 5-6 miles 5 days a week, do mobility exercises, and weigh the same in my 60’s as I did in my 30’s (195 lbs.)
I eat an organic and quite healthy, 90% plant-based diet. Not vegan or vegetarian, just no faith in American meat.,.

Speaking of which, I leave you with these words from Anthony Bourdain:

“For their own good, vegetarians should never be allowed near fine beers and ales. It will only make them loud and belligerent, and they lack the physical strength and aggressive nature to back up any drunken assertions.”

    Cheers.,.

I rarely drink more than 2, I often don't have any beers. Sometimes I'll have other alcoholic drinks, sometimes I just don't drink anything alcoholic. It all depends on my activities, mood, with friends or alone, etc.

If those are 5% beers (I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that's a low end) that is 2.666-5.333 drinks a day. If your average is 7.5% then it's more like 4-8 per day.

That's the value of the Standard Drink for us BAs

I only drank on weekend nights then cut back in stages. Started by switching from my beloved double IPAs to Ales. First Lil Wolf from Zero Gravity 5.7% abv then to Lady of the lake from Able Ebenezer 4.2% Both very good brews. Next stage was moving to N.A. beer. Athletic Brewing Co makes an IPA Run Wild .5% that is decent. It’s no Heady Topper but has 1/16 the alcohol & 1/6 the calories! like a few others said cut out the sugar. More importantly cut out artificial sweeteners as well!
Now I save drinking real alcohol as a treat when having a meal at a nice restaurant.

    A few simple rules:

    1. Never on a "school night." I just can't function properly the next day, even if I just have one or two. Because I have a job that sometimes requires some Saturday and Sunday office hours, that helps limit the intake.

    2. Remember the "math." A 10% ABV is a 2x multiplier at least.

    3. "Dry" [Fill in the month here] feels like an endurance contest that I'm not interested in. I haven't taken an entire month off for several years, but I've taken 2 or 3 weeks off many times (owing to Rule Number One, above).

When I got super into BA, I averaged five beers a day. Trickled back down to two beers a day. Then I took a three month break. Turns out I was breaking the bank pretty badly with my collection (which I still have). Back at it again with reviews.

I drink maybe 1-2 days a week. It's typically about two 7% IPA's on those days, but some weeks I don't even have a beer. Every once in a while I cut loose and have a few more, but I try and keep that somewhat rare.

Many/most of us began by drinking 12oz macros of about 5% ABV (or less) such as Bud, and learned how many of them we could have and still drive or function. When I got into craft and drinking varying drink sizes of 5/12/16/19/22/25 oz and varying ABVs, I started weighing my drinking by a 'Bud factor', which is 60 (ABV*ounces). So, if I'm out and have a 16oz 12% ABV beer, that's 192, or just over three Buds, and I may not be legal to drive, and certainly not comfortable with driving.

Having done a dry couple weeks in prep for annual physical blood work, there is no doubt that even that short break reduced lipid levels to normal. The liver is a busy organ that has to keep up with the effects of the tasty brews.

Well, I did my calculations on how my drinking is going over the last month since I've been tracking it more intensely. Aaaaand :grimacing: 7.5 SDE per day, a hair over 9 average on days I drank anything. Was really hoping that it was closer to 6 because my goal next month is to get it under 5.

On the plus side, I also averaged a bit above 80 oz of water a day which is very reasonable considering how cold and wet it has been. Hoping to push that number closer to 100 next month.

Data is good, even when it's not what you want to hear. The act of tracking habits this month also got me back into a better rhythm with a meditation practice and incentived some home workouts on days I couldn't make it to the gym.

But damn. I drink too much:flushed:

It’s incredibly easy with the high ABVs of craft beer to have 9 in a day and not bat an eye.

Pushing that water intake up should be easy. I consume about 160 oz of various non-alcoholic beverages (including water) per day on average.

Yeah with the abv and serving size of many craft beers it's incredibly easy to get 3-4 drinks from a single "serving".

With water I'm very seasonal. I work outside and so when it warms up and I'm busier it's not uncommon for me to drink nearly 180 oz of water in a day and I typically drink at a gallon. When the weather is cool and wet and I'm less.busy it ebbs back to this level. I start every day with 40 oz of water before I ingest anything else. I've been doing that for a little over a year now and it's crazy how much it's changed my perception of thirst. I find that I need to remind myself to drink more water in the afternoon because I rarely experience thirst unless I engage in some prolonged cardiovascular activity

Last year I drank no alcohol at all from the end of January until mid May, with the exception of one glass of bubbly on my wife's birthday. It required zero effort to just walk away from alcohol, and when I did start drinking again my intake was less than half what I was drinking when I stopped. Severe alcoholism was common in my family, but luckily I didn't get that particular gene.

I really can't wrap my head around morning drinking. If you're not able to have a cup or two of coffee or tea in the AM, then there's definitely a problem there. And to do it over and over, every single day... Yikes!

Everyday, sure, that signals a problem. Unless you work a night shift, and the morning drink is your "night cap" after work.

But people have a drink or two at brunch on weekends all the time. I see nothing wrong with having a mimosa, Bloody Mary, or a beer or two at brunch. Now, if you keep drinking until midnight that day...well that's a different story.

I’m trying to save 8%+ beers only for splitting with friends/family which is usually once a week and then I’ll have a little more like 2-: beer range. Most days I’m trying to stick with 1 <8% beer or a NA beer. If I have a day I still want a 2nd beer I’ll only go with an NA beer.

On average 4 days a week I drink at least one 33 or 50 cl bottle/can.
Either just got home from work or after dinner.
During the weekend, if I go out and I don't have to drive, I drink 3 to 5 beers at the pub (unless there are festivals or special evenings/events). If I have to drive I stop at 2.
If there are midweek events, like going to the stadium (like yesterday), I drink 3/4 beers.
Objectively, I have no particular repercussions or effects.

Well, another month of tracking down and I didn't quite meet my goals but I did improve. Down to 6.25 SDE per day, mostly on the back of doubling my dry days. Still drank near 9 SDE on the days I did drink.

I'll tell you what, good tracking of your habits would probably help anyone control their habits better. I'm trying to get down to taking 12-15 days off a month, and get my total consumption down under 100 drinks a month.

This coming month I'm aiming for 15 dry days and <150 drinks. I'm going to be busy, which usually helps, but I'm also going to a new Orleans wedding. It's some trippy friends that are getting married so I may have to employ some entheogenic plant allies to allay the temptations available in New Orleans (did you know you can drink whenever, wherever you want?!)

It’s none of my business what people drink, but people have volunteered it here. Health care professionals that say x amount of drinks mean 12 ounces at .05, so a drink is .60 worth of alcohol like you say. That’s the math I use. So when people here say they have 3 drinks a day is it this math or is that they have have 3 sixteen ounce cans of a 8% abv NEIPA?

I have no health concerns and am in good shape, but as you get older you focus more on these things. My cholesterol numbers have always been fine, but they shot up for awhile but I went into strict moderation mode on beer and the bad things I eat and was able to knock the numbers back down very quickly. I don’t drink pastry stouts or beers with lactose added, but hopefully that crazy is over or people don’t drink them as I shudder to think the negative impact the ingredients in those beers have.

Exercise and eating right is important, but as someone who keeps an eye on their weight and is incredibly active, I have found that you can’t out-exercise less than optimal eating and keep weight off.

This is my mantra also and was a harsh realization, as I was working out like crazy and very active but the weight was not coming off and even started to increase. Once I accepted that the diet is a bigger part of the overall equation it made a world of difference.

I feel for ya! I have had AS, a type of arthritis that affects the spine and large joints. Alcohol is an inflammatory so not really good for folks with arthritis. I have been fortunate over the years that beer has not been a real problem. But, as I get into the senior years, I know I need to cut back on anything that causes inflammation. However, I am a sucker for yeasty carbs . . . especially good beer and bread. Hope you find a balance that works for you!
