I’m (still) at 39, mostly southern states. Although some surprises—for example, I am positive I’ve had beers from NE, courtesy of a friend who passed through on a road trip, but I am assuming it was before I started keeping track. (Same thing with my remaining styles—I have had a Deus and a faro beer, again pre-review era.).

37 countries, which I could add to if I pursued it a little more diligently. (But I did get Iran, which is like the West Virginia of international beer stats. NA beer for the win!)

I don’t trade, so I guess I’m holding out for a trip to the east coast? Chee, all this statistic business has me ready for another pint.

Only five, must step up :beers:. Have been rating them highly.

    Connecticut | 4 | 1.56% | 4.12
    Missouri | 4 | 1.56% | 4.07
    California | 2 | 0.78% | 4.21
    New York | 2 | 0.78% | 4.36
    Wisconsin | 1 | 0.39% | 4.38

Beer still is a bit local, maybe will stay so. Transport costs are high, a lot of water shipped

So, how many people's "Hawaii" tick was a Kona beer brewed by then owner CBA in the PNW or NH or City's Memphis brewery...
or at AB breweries under contract or, nowadays, as its owner?

Ditto for mid-west or western people's "Massachusetts" tick being Samuel Adams' beers brewed in Ohio or Pennsylvania?

While I want to 'finish' this list, I have not felt like trying to trade for it. Perhaps someday I'll make my way out to WV and review a few beers.

It appears a lot of people are missing WV.

This got me curious, so I decided to see how many German states I think I had a beer from. (Which was a good exercise because I never really thought of German beer through that specific lens besides Bavaria.) I think I'm missing 3 of the 16: Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Saarland.

Well... with that one (like so many macro brands), based on one's region, you might get it from Florida, since the TTB label approval is for all 12 AB breweries. (AB's coding gives the actual brewery).

And, again depending on region, they might get some Yuengling Lager for their "Florida" tick.

(The Feds changed rules in the 1980-1990s (IIRC) and started allowing brewers with multiple breweries to only list their headquarter city or the city where the particular beer is brewed).

In my experience (as someone who points out the same), people generally don't want to engage in that discussion and prefer to simply go with whatever the BeerAdvocate database states... even when the reality doesn't mesh well with their goals. The same logic applies to countries. I bet people are counting an ABInBev beer brewed in the USA for a Dominican Republic tick... or a beer that is majority owned by a Netherlands company and brewed in the Netherlands as an Ethiopian tick. It can become a case of "I'll just pretend that I didn't know that" (which I'm guilty of applying in life at times :grimacing:).

There really isn't much else they can do, is there? I mean, take Landshark Lager. (Please.) They can brew this in any number of places, but it's all contract-brewed for Margaritaville Brewing in Jacksonville, FL. The database can list only one location for that brewery. When you tick Landshark, that's the one you'll get. For purposes of tracking user stats, whatever the BA database says is what it is.

Well, perhaps I'm being very unrealistic, but that seems oddly defeatist to me. We're talking about people who are already geeky enough (no offense, the word fits me too) to be logging beers on a website AND also attempting to collect state ticks. Is it a stretch to think that people who care that much would also go one step further and be conscious of the beers they are drinking beyond a stat line on BA? Doesn't that go hand-in-hand with the goals of the activity? If someone only had one tick from a state and that beer was a Corona competitor, shouldn't that create a red flag for the beer-obsessive person to learn what that beer was? They don't need to have all the answers, but just be aware of the questions, and perhaps aim for another tick from that state to hedge their bets. (Just to be clear about my tone - I don't mean any of this in a harsh way. It's meant to be friendly questioning.)
I might be very wrong about this on multiple levels, but you might be overstating that relationship by calling it contract brew for Margaritaville. I don't know if Margaritaville actually owns the beer being brewed by ABInBev. I'm guessing it's more of a licensing relationship and that we're really just talking about ABInBev beer. Maybe I'm wrong in even thinking there's a distinction there (or with the term contract brew). I think @jesskidden would have a better grasp of this.
Yeah, but that's why I find it strange. A beer can be described as a juniper beer by a brewer and then incorrectly classified on BA as a sahti... or a brewer can release a cocktail inspired bourbon barrel aged pineapple pilsner that gets classified on BA as a German pilsner. If someone on the BA style tick quest only had those two beers in their respective BA categories, would it really make sense for them to claim that they've had a sahti and a German Pils? I've always had the impression that plenty of people would be satisfied with the "it is whatever BA says it is" approach (which is fine)... but personally, that would feel hollow to me and I wouldn't be satisfied if I was actually trying to have a beer in those styles.

Sorry for the overly long response. :beers:

Yeah, while the term "contract brewing" can mean a lot of different sorts of business arrangements, AB's deal with the Buffett megacorporation* is probably best described as simply a licensing deal for the use Margaritaville and Land Shark trademarks, since the beer is distributed through AB's wholesale network and the 'dba' Margaritaville Brewing Co. has no Federal brewing permit, etc.

    * I read somewhere they might expand into recording and releasing music. Seems unlikely but it could happen.

(Funny, I was gonna to comment on it earlier but I figured I'd already reached my self-imposed limit on LandShark comments above for the year.)

Never had it but I'm sure it's good stuff, I mean, the company figurehead has a history of beer connoisseurship.

Sad thing is I have had beers from Kansas (Free State Brewing in Lawrence) but that was before I started reviewing beers. I have also had a beer from West Virginia (Abolitionist Ale Works in Charles Town) but I never got my phone out to review, I think my friend and I were more concerned about getting to the race track to lose our money (and I had some beers earlier when we stopped in Frederick MD on the way).
