How to age a beer without a proper cellar?

    Is a cooler in a dark closet more preferable to just the closet or are we just talking overkill? Also, is there any kind of science/recommendations for how long to age things? I have some scotch ales, and a few people have recommended 6-12 months max. Any general insight people have?
