Well you are in luck, MisSigsFan, because I am pretty sure Deadspin articles are not laws but just an attempt to amuse and inform. Dodged a bullet there.

Not too bad, but I'm a Will Gordon fan. And really, he nails #1, especially this: "The Brewers Association is a trade group that considers itself "a passionate voice for craft brewers." They seem like a fine little lobbying association and awards-show producer, but they don't really have anything much to do with drinking beer, and instead largely concern themselves with defining it".

If I'm going to pay $50 or more to attend a beer festival, then I'm not going to drink bad beer because of what others might think. I'm there to try new beers, and that means I want to try a lot of different beers. I'm not trying them to tick. I try them to find beers I like, so I can purchase them at a later date. If that makes me a beer asshole, then I guess I'm a beer asshole.

Edit: BTW, I'm not talking about spitting it out. I would not do that. I'm talking about dumping the rest of the sample.

I think a line that rings true - and is very applicable to many aspects of the craft beer scene:

"Politely address the situation by exploiting the gigantic gulf that exists between being a dickhead and being a sucker."

If you're not at a beer festival to first and foremost get drunk, you might be doing it wrong. Most beers can't possibly be judged properly from a couple ounces in a taster glass.

I agree but even if I had no idea what Deadspin was or even if it had any credibility the #1 says:
"Craft beer" doesn't really mean shit anymore (if it ever did).

I lost complete interest in this article after. Just like you wouldn't try to persuade someone to believe in something you believe in by badmouthing them first.

This is another article where the title, which is designed to attract attention, is more provocative than the substance of the article. Most of the substance is common sense and the people who understand that will read the article and probably agree with a percentage of it. The people he is trying to reach won't make it very far into his article before they dismiss him as an ass. It is debatable whether or not the people he is trying to reach actually need to be reached. The craft beer point is something the media loves to tout and there is an industry turf argument here but I suspect that most people who bother to participate here have a pretty firm idea of what craft beer is. Most of the other stuff is common knowledge.

Do you not agree that the Brewer's Associate's constant re-defining of the term has made it lose credibility?

You will buy a beer from a brewery if they have 24% outside ownership, but not 25%? How do you really draw a line?

For some of us, getting drunk is not the reason we go to a beer festivals.

@Johntomk is not alone, in using beer festivals as an opportunity to try new beers, not for the sake of ticking, but for finding new beers and breweries that they want to revisit.

I do agree reviewing a beer based on a taster is not a good idea. And doing it during a beer festival, where you are having many tasters is even worse.

However, there is a distinction between reviewing a beer, and determining if it's one you want to revisit. I think most of us on this site are capable of determining which beers we want to revisit based on a tasting during a beer festival.

Other than the slightly over-the-top headline - what exactly in the article did you disagree with?

I thought it was a fine primer for someone getting into beer. What's wrong with the general message of "you can start to like good beer without being a snob"?

Rule 1 and only: Don't be a snooty asshole about anything. Treat other human beings with dignity and kindness.

Really, that's all there is too it. There are nice ways to inform those who aren't in the know about the things you like and there are dickish ways to inform people. Whether this is beer, your field of expertise for work, another hobby or anything else just treat them like you would like to be treated in a field that you are ignorant about.

If I was a jerk everytime a friend or family member said something ignorant about beer, I wouldn't have either left.

It really is easy, just reiterate some things others have already said. Be passionate about the beer you purchase and consume and don 't care so much about the beer other people choose to drink. I love drinking many different barrel-aged beers, but I have plenty of friends who enjoy drinking either PBR or Yuengling. Whatever makes everyone happy and helps everyone else have a good time is all that matters.
