Yes to this. I don't want to turn this into a political discussion, but I have the same viewpoint. I'm so tired of hearing people point out that such and such a viewpoint is flawed because it's impossible to get 100% compliance, so therefore let's not do anything about a particular obvious problem.

At least make an effort to do better. We're all flawed, we all make mistakes, but sometimes just trying to do the right thing can make a difference. Maybe not right away, but eventually. So keep on trying.

I don’t think I have any simple rule that doesn’t get broke from time to time beer wise. I would say the one thing I personally am very strict about, a rule I don’t break really ever, is clean glassware when I pour.

Have they caught on to your game yet, some friend you are yikes

    I have a couple, Raul.

    1. Drink and let drink - no need for beer nerd snobbery.

    2. Drink beer from a glass whenever possible, because not doing so is uncivilized - which is a prime example of beer nerd snobbery.

    I am a conundrum.

@John_M it's not that I dislike dragons milk, but I was looking for a good comparison. Both beers are barrel aged stouts, one is cheap and the other is not. The quality is lesser as well. But because I have the one beer rule I never really buy the beer anymore.
Also, like many others I do not buy from companies who do not support my own moral beliefs. I'm all for equality, and won't buy beers that belittle or demean others. I also won't buy beers that support racism and cultural nationalism of any sort. I'm also trying to get away from violent or overtly satanic imagery. Call me weird.

I don't know how common this is but I could see it being an expression of the ticker mentality. Having four beers standing between you and your next tick is bad enough, having three of those beers being less than life changing is simply intolerable . There's no time to spare, new beer number 5432 awaits (essentially).

Just thinking about it a little, I guess I don't have many. Even breweries I don't like usually make at least something decent. I can't think of any readily available beer I hate so much that I'll never drink one again. The only two things I can think of:

    1. Don't age anything except aged sours/wilds and barleywine.
    2. Don't buy any table-strength beers that were brewed more than 9 months ago. Usually 6 is the limit, but 9 is safe from some places.

Lol, similar dilemma I’m facing… I’m on vacation in NC and saw Hop Drop and Roll at the local Food Lion. Passed on it the other day. Never had it before, so should I buy a 6er to take home, even if it’s a little dated (2 months?) as it’s a classic well respected IPA that has eluded me for last decade but old is old.

The Heineken Brewery in Amsterdam is incredible. The beer is very good and the entire region smells like a great bakery. They were magnanimous, generous, and a great place to visit. We had a great crowd of Yanks, Brits, German, Dutch, Irish, French, Aussies, Japanese, Kiwis, and basically just regular travelers in those days. It was a non-ending party that really has never ended. I still have some of those friends from 50 years ago. We were hitchhiking and stayed with some fellows from York on its 1000th anniversary and Cardiff on a tour of England, Scotland, and Wales. We went with them in an Austin Mini through England, Wales, Scotland and just generally back in Time. It was the best journey of my life. We climbed Ben Nevis, the highest point in Great Britain. The headline of the paper in Elgin, Scotland stated HEATWAVE! It was in the low 70s and delightful. Jeez, these memories are still very alive and vibrant. But I WAS in my early 20s.

My main beer rule is that if it has "IP<letter>" in its style descriptor, it stays on the shelf or in the keg. All past violations of this rule have ended in tears and ruin for me, alas. Though I am open to a potential revision if I can find a lactose-enhanced variant and it proves more drinkable for me.

There's a corollary rule where I am wary if the style descriptor contains either of the words "American" or "pale", and doubly so if it contains both.

Said rules are sadly genetically locked in for me.

I tend to be pretty structured. So, yes, I have rules (or more like guidelines :sunglasses:):
    • I don't drink more than three times a week
    • I don't drink more than 2 beers at a time (except for holidays and special occasions)
    • I try to keep a balance between buying/drinking beer that I have drunk and liked and buying from new breweries.
    • I mostly drink IPAs from the tap or crowler/growler.
    • I try not to drink beers that I haven't done some research.
    • I don't spend more than a dollar an once for "top" beers.
    • I drink quality, not quantity. So, I don't purchase cases and rarely a twelve pack.
    • I rarely buy imports because I want my beer fresh.
    • I rarely buy/drink beer older than 90 days.
    • I don't follow trends, but admit to still getting excited about BA Beers.
    • Lastly, I can ignore any of my rules if I want to!

Hmmm, I have preferences these days, rather then rules.

I prefer tulips over shakers or tumblers.
    I prefer fresh draft beer.
I prefer beers with friends & family then alone.
I prefer to follow seasons for styles.
I prefer to avoid hazy IPAs.

I often don't get my preferences met, but appreciate and advocate, often, regardless.

    Cheers

The only rule for me is to drink what you like as time is too short and there are only so many beers to be drank in a lifetime! I also don’t believe that free beer is always worth the cost. Also we need more vanilla in beer (I just put that to counter the no vanilla guy from earlier). Vanilla used correctly is a great beer addition
