    Happy New year to all!

This thread is where the Beer Advocate community can come to offer suggestions and input to help determine the online tastings that happen periodically. In 2021 we had 11 tastings covering both a variety of styles and featuring some classic beers! It was a hugely successful year thanks to all of you who make these tastings so much fun!

As we start to plan out the topics for 2023 here are some things to keep in mind:
    • The theme or topic of the tasting can be a single beer, a single style, a subset of similar styles, or a particular theme. In the past we have had tastings that fit into all of those various categories.
    • The goal of these tastings is always to encourage people to explore beers they may not have been otherwise inclined to explore, to learn more about these beers, to review these beers on BA, and most important of all, to have fun and interact with other BAs.
    • While we try to avoid revisiting a previously covered style(s), it’s not a hard and fast rule. For instance, Oktoberfest will be back again this year!
Although we've tried a couple different ways to pick the tasting topics, the current method is just general discussion until a general consensus is reached. So, jump in here, offer suggestions, offer thoughts and input, and be part of choosing the next topic. And if your suggestion is not picked? Don't worry, there is always the next tasting.

Once a tasting topic is chosen, a weekend will be chosen (again, by general consensus) and then a host will set up a separate tasting thread for the specific tasting.

For reference, here are the prior Idea Submission Threads:

Also, a major, major thank you to @ChicagoJ for assisting with tracking the tasting thread history. Again, for reference, here are the prior tasting threads through the posting of this new Idea Submission Thread, so keep these prior tastings topics in mind when making suggestions:

Thank you Frank for kicking off this thread and coordinating these event! I enjoy and learn so much from these tastings, and try to participate whenever I can.

I believe you should add these four 2022 tastings to your OG Post to complete the list:
I’ll add a separate post for the styles and sub-styles we have yet to attempt and a few additional possibilities to consider in 2023. I do like all four suggestions so far.

I like this as a focused event, realizing it might or will likely be lower trafficked, as is much of BA for the same concern, but could bring out how differently we perceive a classic beer.

I didn’t get it together this year but here’s a reminder to my future self to propose a month-long NA tasting (for dry January) sometime down the road… once there’s more NA options, perhaps.

Absolutely agree. @ChicagoJ is spot on here! It would be great to focus a weekend for each of the recently added styles.
Even if the style notes are incomplete; as the event may actually help generate consensus on how to define/describe these styles. It can generate conversation about why x-beer is not representative and z-beer is representative.

Significant advance notice would be advisable because these styles are less well represented on the shelves

thank you!!! I will add these and update overall numbers.

We did it last year and I was shocked at how many good NA options are available. You should start a thread for the NA beers - I know there have been NA beer threads the last couple years.

We covered these in the dark lager tasting last year - it was a lot of fun! Would love to see more lager centric tastings in the future.

Yea, this is a great idea - I want to do a smoked beer tasting weekend - so that could help showcase Grodziskie but allow alternative options for those who can't find grodziskie on the shelves.

Also if there is any tasting that touches on grisette @REVZEB should host it as the first and foremost proponent of the #splitupsaison movement.

A big YES to stouts. I’d love to say grisette, but I have yet to find any locally, and I’ve been looking.

I feel like 2023 is the year that the #SplitUpSaison movement really takes off! Join or live in a world of catch-all saison! Give farmhouse ales the individual attention they deserve!

Love these and hope to participate more again this year.

Reading the posts above, what about trying a Czech lager tasting at some point. Any Plato, any color, as long as the brewer claims to be attempting Czech styles.

We saw two new Czech styles fleshed out in the style list and it seems like there's a real boost in interest nationally. Could be cool to explore the thread(s) that tie the varieties together.

Also, hell yes to a smoked beer tasting

I humbly submit a "Top 3 of the 'Most Popular Beers' List" tasting event. I really liked the SNPA event in 2021 and originally was thinking a Two Hearted event would be fun - but then I looked at the "Most Popular Beers" list, and thought a Top 3 tasting event would open up opportunities for a lot of BA's to participate easily because of the availability of those beers nationally, year-round.

The list includes FBS, DFH 90 Minute, and Two Hearted. As with the SNPA event, participants could share their experiences with the beers, share review thoughts, and celebrate these iconic beers in our beer nerd world.

Belgium quad / BSDA seem to be one of the more obvious styles that hasn’t been done yet.

I also like the already proposed ideas of toasting Armand (with a 3F only or a lambic/gueze revisit) and a Beers of Fame.

Upon further review, I would like to throw my hat into the New Styles of 2022 ring.
Maybe we could do a deep dive into the new Czech Styles during one tasting session.

I have tried and intend to try more Czech Styles from Schilling Beer Co., and would like very much to tell the whole world about them. Cheers.

Many good points here. Accessibility is an interesting point. I enjoyed the holiday tasting very much, but was a bit frustrated by not being able to find a Samichlaus.

It has crossed my mind a few times, so I’ll suggest a Bell's tasting while Larry's fingerprints are still on the bar at Eccentric Cafe. He was so important to craft beer and made so many loved beers.
