would you take an older vintage or most recent?

Most recent. I prefer to cellar my own beer and not take the chance that someone has exposed the bottle to elements that I wouldn't. But that would be my opinion if I had a choice.

However, if you want to try DL and you want to try it now, get one from '10 or '11 ('12 would probably be too fresh).

Older vintage. I have heard much better things about '09 and older DL than I have experienced with '11 and '12 DL.

Every year has its time to shine. 09 was bad fresh and had a terrible reputation, but is great now.

I traded for a 5 year vertical of DL a little short of a year ago. The 07 was oxidized and nearly a drain pour, the 08 was fantastic, the 09 (consumed in March) didn't impress me much. I'm looking forward to trying the '10 and '11 in the near future and would like to try the 12 (assuming I can land one) fresh.

If given the option, I'd prefer to trade for a properly kept older vintage.

Thanks for all the input. Usually an ipa guy and drink em right away. Still learning about the aging stouts. I have a dark lord 11 and 12 in my possession. Might put one up for trade.

Given its reputation, the '09 absolutely blew me away. If it's been stored properly, don't hesitate to trade for it. I personally think DL is best enjoyed with about two years on it, but that's just me.

I agree on the 2 year comment, just typed that in the other DL thread.
