Abyss seemed really difficult to get in my area of SoCal (sold out in hours), so I assumed it was hard to get everywhere. However, I walked into a grocery store in Austin yesterday and found an entire case on the shelves (no limits). Is it still sitting around in your area?

Yes. 20$ a bottle. Too steep for me. Though I do not mind spending 28$ in eclipse

    Still around NorCal.
Bevmo released it at $15 but jacked it up to $20 on their next shipment.
$15 is doable, not a tweeny twin twin!

How far east does Abyss make it anyway? Curious if it's possible to track down in NY/PA at the right place.

Oh god. Don't tell me the "Is ____ still sitting on the shelves in your area?" boards are the new thing to do. They're super annoying, especially for people who don't even have access to said beer.

Got it. I was honestly just interested in the variation in demand between states since I found it so easily in Texas, but it sold out so quickly in SoCal.

It does make it to PA, that's the only state on the east coast though. Check out seekabrew - http://seekabrew.com/distro/index.html

It wasn't that easy to find everywhere in Texas - many places in DFW sold their allotment pretty much instantly. Maybe Austin got a whole bunch, or you walked in 5 minutes after they put it on the shelves. Who knows.

If I'd known how "meh" it was fresh, I would have gladly traded the bottle I found (and drank) with somebody instead.

Where did you find it? Texas distribution is crap, so it's possible that they either didn't know they had it and put it out, or some people just got some late delivered..

It also came out when Bomb and Crime/Punishment/Southern Charred among others came out.. so some beers didn't get that much attention. Also the price is key on how Austin peeps buy beer.. some stores had it for like 17.99 or higher, while I found some of mine for 13.99 I believe.

It's probably a Austin thing...back in Houston, that stuff would fly off the shelves, even at 1 or 2 per person limit.

It was the Royal Blue on Congress (downtown). It was going for $17.99 a bottle, which sounds like the higher end. Since I am just visiting for a few days, I am not sure if this has been sitting around or if it's a new shipment.

There was a lot in Palm Desert - I was there yesterday and Total Wines had a tone left. I believe it was 14.99 there.

I'm in Susq. County, I get most of my beer in NY anyway so I'm not really near any big cities that would get better distribution. Usually when seekabrew says PA gets it, it means that Philly and Pittsburgh get it rarely. Hell, according to seekabrew, we get Cigar City...ha.
I'd be up for a trade though if there's anything you think I'd be able to find for you though, I don't keep much of a "have" list yet though so shoot me a message if you want.

Have to agree, It seemed to sell pretty quick in DFW, I did happen to find three bottles sitting on a shelf at a Central Market back in December, which seemed odd, but nothing since then.

On the other hand I found five bottles in Las Cruces New Mexico the last week of December just sitting there. Think it does depend sometimes on location.

Never saw bottles when I briefly looked at small handful of retailers, only on tap at the growler station @ Total Wine. I know a bar here locally was selling bottles for 30 or so a pop.

Initial rush sold fast here, then started seeing it everywhere when I was looking for BCBS. I stopped buying it after a few bottles and just started alerting locals to where it is. Haven't seen it in a couple weeks tho.

I would guess, at least in this Austin case, that it's a matter of where it was found. All the "regular" spots like Sunrise Minimart, Whip In, Spec's, South Lamar Wine & Spirits, etc sold out of the Abyss rather quickly. As far as I know, Royal Blue isn't regarded as a hot-spot bottle shop, thus people probably didn't bother to look there...I know I didn't.

After striking out around town, I had given up hope of finding a bottle this year. I was in my regular HEB store a couple days ago and the beer guy noticed that I had a couple bottles of Prairie Noir (another rare find) in my basket. He then asked me if I'd be interested in the Abyss...? I was like, what?! I didn't even know they were carrying it! He had it in a locked drawer, but was offering it to people who either asked about it or looked like they might appreciate such a thing. So yeah, you never know where you'll find the good stuff...

Maybe I'll have to swing by Royal Blue sometime soon...

Des chutes has been distributing a lot if the full time beers in Philly for a while. I did see a few large bottles of some type of porter at WFM a while ago. Not sure how much if any of the limiteds are getting here yet. Not been looking for beer in a month or so, been buying cases only. I do get the Capones beer shop list and have not seen abyss on the list.

    Enjoy
