I have had Heady, Abrasive, Pliny, Ghandi (drinking now), Hopslam, Artic Panzer, Drednaught, Mycerenary, Dirt Wolf to name a few stellar DIPAs..
IMO Heady Topper gets the crazy wacko attention due to its limited availability and proximity to Boston, New York, just like a #2 Montechristo Cubano or a Cohiba Rubusto .
Blindfolded and fresh I would be hard pressed to pick HT over any of the other beers above. I like to think I would pick fresh Abrasive over them all.
Like Dr. Lecter told Clarice, We covet what we see ever day. That silver F-in can with black writing cant get it out of our heads.

not a bad comparison and I'd tend to agree. It's awesome and perhaps a little better than other world class DIPA's but not really noticably.

Out of all the beers you named Heady is, or was, by far the easiest for me to get in quantity.

Heady has a much different mouthfeel than all other beers. Its almost unmistakable and hard to confuse with another beer. The attention it gets is deserved IMO. That being said Abrasive and Gandhi Bot are not too far behind it. I love both of those beers. My personal favorite DIPA is Abner.

No, in that HT is legal to get in the US.
If you mean to ask if its popularity is due to the fact is very hard to come by, then you may have an argument.

I don't know man. I think the scarcity is maybe a small part of the intrigue, but at the end of the day, it's still amazing.

Outside of Beeradvocate, who else thinks Heady is the best beer (or I should say the best DIPA) in the world?

I haven't had Abrasive, but HF, Lawson's and even other Alchemist DIPAs are pretty solid local examples of heady alternatives and they're way harder to get.

Heady is a totally unique brew and I haven't had anything else like it...unless it's brewed by the Alchemist, such as Ouroborus, still.
Again, as long as Heady is ranked #1, it will catch tons of flack. Might I suggest not buying it?

And by 'fresh' do you mean, the day it's canned? The week it's canned?

Who cares what the Schlitz drinkers of America (and RB) think? I wanted to hate Heady but it's pretty damn hard to do so. One of it's advantages is they hand it to you off the production line has opposed to the three or more months Sculpin spends getting here. It is the best DIPA I've had, but send me some of that Ghandi Bot if you would be so kind.

Heady is a great DIPA. There are some beers though coming from Cali that rival it. Alpine, Drakes, RR, Societe and many others. I know that statement gets some around here all wound up but it is the truth.

I have no ill-will toward Heady. It was just an honest question. I've yet to try any "world class" or top DIPA or IPA's, but I will eventually get around to trying some. I was just curious if outside of BA, is HT regarded as world class, or the best?

Hard to say what fresh is. I guess I should have said not fresh, which is something you can only tell after its too late. My point wasn't to trash HT it is a great beer!

BTW. Looks like your dog can handle a pint better than mine

I finally got to have some Heady this past summer, and it was amazing. However, I found that after 2-3 cans, my taste buds were just thrashed. Such an aggressive beer. Tasty? Absolutely. But I think in terms of overall beer amazingness, it still falls short of Pliny the Elder, which I've had a TON of over the years. The more I think about it, it's not even close (to me). I just recently tried Gandhi-Bot for the first time too, and it was also amazing, right up there with the best. I dream of one day trying Double Sunshine.

I'd like to think Heady is a bit more consistent than Monte #2's.

It's not a bad analogy. Personally I find Heady to be unmistakable from West Coast dIPAs. When compared with New England based dIPAs, it's more in line with Double Sunshine than say Ghandi-bot. I personally feel that Heady is the best beer in the world and is very distinctive in character.

Cannot go wrong with Heady, Abner, Double Sunshine, Fuzzy Baby Ducks (only a single IPA but has a similiar profile), Pliney, and Gandhi. All are superb beers and all have a little uniqueness to them. We have done side by sides with all of the above beers vs Heady and they are all really close. However, Gandhi is the most unique of all the DIPAs I just listed and Pliney is the least aggressive.

On a side note I just drank my last heady yesterday (from thanksgiving and still tasted great)...A sad day

Two issues with your comparisons. Many beers mentioned are not available in most states of New England - IMO HT gets its attention due its availability to ppl in New England as well as its value - New England is thirsty for hop bombs and very few breweries in the region are delivering on that - and/or value. And if you think Heady topper is equivalent to Dirt Wolf either Head Topper has slipped in hoppiness even more than I thought, wasn't that fresh when you tried it, or your palate can't tell the difference.

I’ve had plenty of Cubans and they are living on their past reputation.
Not to mention there’s 10 times the amount of Cuban cigars sold as produced. Which means 75 percent of the so called overpriced Cubans cigars are NOT Cubans at all. But if that’s what floats your boat have at it.

BOT has my vote for best DIPA

Double Sunshine is better, but this still doesn't take Heady out of the running as being a Cuban cigar

    In no particular order:
    Ghandi Bot
    Double Sunshine

At their best It's pretty hard to pick a winner. I'd be happy with any one of them in my hand.
