Once the political dust settles we'll be welcoming everything Russian again watch. I'm wondering how long after WW1 and 2 did we start welcoming everything German again. I'm sensing a pattern here.

Dammit, if I see this I'm all in. I'm sick of serving the group home residents Reubens made with Thousand Islands dressing.

Schickelgruber was a teetotaler. Just sayin'.

Plus, the Fest was cancelled from '39 to '45, so that wasn't very supportive.

No matter what it is, I always find it amusing when the over correction on EVERYTHING is akin to a new driver in a tale spin flailing around behind the wheel.
Makes me think if India gets into some sorta similar situation what ever would the beer world do to rebrand IPA...wooo boy, think tank time kids

So I am guessing Russian Wolfhound puppies will be a hard sell for the foreseeable future. I suspect everything will return to normal once Putin is no longer in power….whenever that happens.

    Are you serious?

Most Russians have never heard of Russian Imperial Stout. It isn’t Russian culture or heritage. It’s a beer created in England.

Good point, bastardizing British beers is an important part of American beer culture. So I guess this is just par for the course!

Bell's Expedition is still a Russian Imperial Stout. And delicious as ever...

I met an Englishman at the Chicago Real Ale festival (2000?) who asked me why Americans redundantly called it "Russian Imperial Stout? It's Imperial, or it's Russian."

I had no answer, but it's stuck with me.

I don't really know, but...Can we keep politics out of our beloved craft beer hobby? Maybe? Somehow? Perhaps?

Oh, and I have my grain bill in hand to brew my own RIS next weekend, so there's that too...

(The beer knows no boundaries or allegiances...)

How would I know? Point is I don’t make it my business to change a 300 year old term. I try to humble myself to a degree that I realize my “feelings” of the last 6 months aren’t cause to make such an action. Cheers.

I remember on Mission’s RIS (I don’t know if that’s still a thing) they had a blurb on their packaging about how the “ancient Russian kings” kept their old stout recipe a super special secret until Mission came along, or something. Should’ve told them that, because it sounds like a pretty solid reason.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but politics has infiltrated every facet of American life, including and especially so given the the context of this conversation; beer.

    Cheers.

What year was that? I was just reading how the two terms weren't used together until some time in the 1970s.

I specifically remember during lockdown because I worked in a liquor store at night that sales of Corona plummeted.

Assuming this is the same deal with the Russian labeling thing?

I shouldn't even have to type that I disagree with the war but also feel people just see the word RUSSIA amd will not buy the product because of whatever and companies will lose sales. Similarly to the Corona situation.

Cant walk out the house without hurting somebody's feelings.

And I get it. I do.

But please. That's my response. Please. The world is only here to hurt you. The thicker the skin the better off is how I put it. And that statement has NOTHING to do with my opinion on human rights. I'm young. And I think alot of young people my age need to cut the shit.

I don't want to start political thing here but I swing left. So I'm not some flag waving conservative and a STILL think the sensitivity is too much.

Yep, brewers are people and will thus continue to engage in varying degrees of political speech. That's one big reason we will never be able to keep politics out of the wider discussion of beer. The other major reason is that beer drinkers are people too

...Okay, I totally *get* breweries removing the word "Russian" from their beers for posterity's sake, but adding/replacing it with "Ukrainian" is absurd. You can decry a country for their actions, or support another without resorting to weak, low-blow, virtue signaling. That just reeks of disingenuousness.

I was 17 in 1968 and was lining up working for Bobby Kennedy in the Fall. He was murdered in the Summer and I was crushed. That year saw the murder of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy. That was a truly shitty time with Viet Nam still raging. It was very easy to become radicalized.
