Many of you BA's know about/have heard about Johnathan Wakefield, a Miami homebrewer absolutely famous for his luscious fruited "florida-weisses"(and has brewed with Cigar City several times). Well, now J Wakefield Brewing, his imminent brewery, has a Facebook page, so we can keep up with everything he's doing.

I can't say enough about how great this is for the Florida beer scene in general, especially southern FL. Like the page on Facebook and prepare for the awesome that is his beer. You won't be sorry

    Cheers!

FYI - Wakefield Brewing will have a listing on here as soon as I get an head's up from Johnathan that his license was issued - already got all the brewery and beer info on-hand. Please don't try to 'Add Place'.

I agree, but I'm sure there's a reason behind it. Trademarks or something like that. At any rate, Cigar City person, ahem, you guys should share that on your Facebook page....ahem. :grinning:

Where exactly is the brewery? I know everyone always says Miami, is it actually Miami or one of the surrounding areas? I did not see an address on the facebook page and I am striking out in google searches too.

If there is a location picked, pretty sure there isn't anything there yet. In an interview, JW said if things go well "late 2013" iirc.

In other words, start stalking him and show up at his house with an empty snifter and some cash. :stuck_out_tongue:

OK, I thought that it was still going to be a bit, but the pic on the facebook page threw me off. I could not tell for sure if that was a pic from CCB's setup, so I HOPED it was a pic of the new brewery already. With relatives in the Miami area, I was going to start prepping them now to buy me beer

Let the prepping begin, I say. Yeah from FB, he was at CCB for an internship all week.

He's currently brewing on a pilot system in an industrial area near Tropical Park. I'm not sure if that's the permanent home for the brewery or merely a stop along the way. And I wouldn't offer him money for beer unless you want to get him into trouble.

Basically the brewery is stuck in a holding pattern where he can guest brew at licensed facilities (i.e. Cigar City) or bring his beers to "organized affairs, exhibitions, or competitions, such as homemakers' contests, tastings, or judgings". Until they're licensed, they can't directly charge for the beers (although there are some obtuse workarounds for beer dinners and festivals). The license has been pending for a while now, and it will take some time to get things going once it's issued. It's too risky to keep perishable ingredients on-hand when the time frame is so uncertain.

This is great news Johnathan Wakefield brews some of the best beers I have ever had, and he brews the best Berliner-weisses, Floridaweisses, Whatever-we-wanna-call-em-weisses, I have ever had. Moreover, he is a truly nice guy as well. Luckiily for everyone soon(relatively) his beers will be available on a larger scale.

    Awesome news, Congratulations Wakefield!

And, are those apples in the IPA boil that he is brewing with Doug?

JW is a very gracious person and good guy to get to be around. He brews very well respected and tasty beers. He may be somewhat hard to pin down on specifics as far as his potential brewery goes, but there is a reason for that.

First of all, I can feel for him. When you are asked about your beers/brewery about 1086 times at a 4 hour beer festival (I watched this happen) it gets a little tough to take after a while but he handles it with tact and aplomb.

Secondly, and this is ENTIRELY MY speculation on the most difficult challenge that JW has to overcome: He is the entirety of what J Wakefield Brewing will be/could become. He is the brewer AND the guy having to make financial/operational/marketing decisions. It's a helluva hat to wear to not only MAKE the beer that everyone loves but decide where to put the location, how to finance it, to hire employees, etc. I'm not doubting that he can pull this off but I'm sure it would be a lot easier if he could be the brewer and 'face' of the brewery with a financial interest taking care of all of the bullshit business aspects that the head brewer should not have to trouble himself with. It's a tremendous responsibility but I am sure that he is fully capable of it. It just weighs a lot on one persons shoulders.

I look at the beneficial relationship of Joey Redner and Wayne Wambles and think that they really helped each other to become what Cigar City has become. Doctors hire office managers so that they can be caregivers and not worry about having their bills paid in a timely manner. Maybe brewers could use the same assistance. Just my $.02 although no one asked for it and I sure hope my friend JW does not take offense in this since I wish him the best in all sincerity.

    Your friend,
    Matt

Not to be a kill-joy here, but you can't apply for a manufacturers license unless you have a signed lease on a facility.
