Same here, not sure if it was the overall praise behind SMS or the fact that I have never really cared for anything Weyerbacher has released recently but I thought SMS tasted like cheap whiskey and coffee grounds.

Weyerbacher is probably a lot smaller than founders and I would assume that there was a lot more KBS than sunday morning to go around. The one thing I noticed about SMS though, there were no limits and those who wanted it just bought several cases. KBS however was limited to between 2 and 8 bottles and it seems like everyone who put forth a little effort did get some.

SMS is overly boozy, bitter coffee, harsh all the way around. I'm glad I didn't buy any I would of traded it away.

Founders made a 11.9% version specifically for Ohio this year.

I've only had SMS 2x and it was about 6 months old by the time I tried it. Maybe the booze had softened because I didn't find it overly boozy or harsh. But, KBS it was not. I'm wondering if by the time KBS has come out SMS has softened enough to make it comparable. KBS just kills me how right away, right out of the bottle, it is basically a perfect balance and holds up for a good while to boot.

Found a couple of 4 packs at a small local bottle shop yesterday and picked up one bottle for $6. Wen't back today and picked up two more bottles, one for a buddy, and one to age. They only had a few bottles left after I left today.

It's pretty cool what you can find at small local shops in semi-rural places sometimes.

I have another sighting. For Sacramento folks Pangaea has a 2 bottle limit and 6 oz (lol) pours for $7.50. This is as of 4/16.

Because every place in Ohio sold out within 12 minutes

yes KBS is nectar of the gods (I just finished a bottle now) but a 6 oz glass is stupid to even keep at a taphouse

Absolutely! I had given up on getting any BCBS this past Black Friday when I stumbled across three bottles at a small-town grocery three days later. Hardly any of their customers would know what they are or would pay $10 for a beer. The distributor reportedly split a case between the grocery and a small liquor store down the street, so this year I'll clean both of them out on Black Friday if possible. Neither got KBS but I rustled up six bottles elsewhere.

'16 is good but got thinned out too much. Had '15 on tap three days ago at a Founders takeover and it's everything that '16 is not. Thick. Chocolatey. Luscious.

Pretty difficult to score both KBS and SMS in the NC Triangle area. I worked pretty hard to get 6 SMS and 3 KBS. Have to say I prefer SMS slightly now but think KBS may surpass it in a few months. I love the more prominent barrel character in SMS though...

SMS killed KBS this year in my opinion ... Will not be hunting KBS ever again ! Second year in a row I have been disappointed ! Happy hunting to those who find this beer great ! Way over priced

Quick question: Does anyone else find that KBS really doesn't age that well? Or perhaps this is just my palate? I snagged two bottles of this year's vintage - one of which I plan to crack this weekend - but I have concerns about aging the second bottle since my last bottle of last year's vintage didn't hold up that well. Now, it wasn't a bad beer by any stretch, but the flavors seemed muted and somewhat ho-hum compared to what I had expected...

...also, anyone tried aged bottles of FBS? I have one fresh bottle and one from last year in my cellar, and I'm curious how that one holds up, if at all...

Just read an article the other day, in which the head brewer over at Founders said that he prefers KBS fresh, not aged. Of course, now that I want the article, I can't find it. Anyway, make of that what you will.

And EDIT, I found it: http://draftmag.com/to-age-or-not-to-age-kbs-edition/

See, I thought I heard something on that score last year as well, but couldn't remember with 100 percent clarity. Don't get me wrong: it still drank fine, but I found myself wishing I hadn't aged it. Of course, it could also be that I was doing a battle of one-year old BCS versus one-year old KBS and BCS is just the better beer, but who's to say?

Check out the Cellaring Beer forum - there is a separate thread dedicated to aging KBS. I enjoy it fresh and aged, and think I really like it up to 18 months or so.
