Back in the day, Kate was close to the top of the whale scale. Today, so many insta-whales are the focus of traders. What sort of beer might draw a Kate. It's probably the last beer I feel like I really want to try.

Does it take rare Cantillon, Chocolate Rain, or something else?

    Cheers

I hope not, but i am in the same boat. Anyone trade for a Kate recently? And was it worth it?

This is purely subjective but i subject that NO DEAR GOD IT IS NOT WORTH IT.
I was wholely underwhelmed by that beer. Nothing stood out as extroardinary to me.

That being said I know there are tons of people who love it and will tell you the exact opposite from what I told you. To each there own, more Kate for you guys!

A while back, I traded mine straight up for a 2009 Black Tuesday.
Not sure if that's of any help.

I've had three vintages of KTG, and I'll be the first to admit the 2012 was not as good as the '10 or '11. The port flavor was nowhere near as bold as in the previous vintages.
To OP, I would aim for an older vintage or wait for the '13 to come out in a few months and make your move then.

Is the '13 coming out with the head brewer leaving? Just a question..not implying it's not coming out. Genuinely curious.

Isn't KtG not being made at Portsmouth any more since Tod left?

Obviously subjective, but still one of things we need to find out for ourselves. Thanks for sharing your opinion though, seems in line with what others have said too.

Sorry OP, didnt mean to thread jack. Can others provide recent examples of what landed a Kate and what year?

Yes :slight_frown: Is that your husband?!

Interesting, I've had '12 and '09 (not infected) but wasn't a big fan of either. Suppose I could give other vintages a try if I come across one

Kate was a huge disappointment and imo its only worth the tick if you trade a lot for it. I've said it before and its a very well executed beer but nothing special. It should be a 10-12 dollar 4 pack shelf beer at the most.

Honestly if there's a beer more overrated than Kate, it's probably Damon. It doesn't hold a candle to any year of BCBS. I had it side by side with a few of Shaun's other beers and we were all disappointed. Everett and BoT for example both blew it out of the water.

That's exactly what makes it special...there are no flaws, its perfectly executed. Its selling point lies in that instead of barrels or exotic ingredients or w/e else might make a beer "special." If those are what you're expecting when you try KtG then yes, you will be disappointed. You gotta take it for what it is. I can understand why people are pissed or regret trading for it when they're all about barrel beers or w/e and trade those beers for KtG. People looking to trade for it really should read reviews before jumping on the bandwagon sometimes.

What makes it special is it's not special? Boy there's an advertising angle you don't see used every day.

I see your point, despite my sarcasm, but when a beer qualifies as a hugely expensive beer by having no flaws, well, what does that say about things? There were a few beers I tasted last Fri. when I was a judge at a hb comp. that qualify as that, and many shelf beers too. The difference between them and Kate?
