I gotta agree that's a really weird caveat. No brewery is either top notch or second rate based on whether they try their hand at a style of beer (wild ales) or not. That's like saying Cantillon could be a top notch Belgium brewery but they won't be until they're putting out great barrel aged stouts.

You need to understand what kind of space and time is required to start a sour program. PWs is a growing company. I'd expect with all the fruit/spices they've been using in some of the most recent beers, sour beer is probably something they'll be interested in doing when they have the capacity to create some sours.

Ummm...how many berliners has PW's done? While the Blue(cheese) Lady had that one bad batch, the others were good with the Flower Child being excellent IMO (that has been my favorite of the bunch). i know it's not a lambic/gueze/wild ale, but i'm not sure i'd want them using the yeast in the air at wabansia and western:wink:

Pipeworks Brewing plans new brewery, distributing beer in cans

    By Josh Noel, Tribune Newspapers
    5:38 p.m. CDT, July 24, 2014

Pipeworks Brewing, which has built a fervent following since its 2012 debut despite miniscule output, is planning to build a new brewery on the city's west side that will more than triple its production.

Brewery co-founder Gerrit Lewis said Thursday that he and partner Beejay Oslon have signed a 20-year lease on a 16,000-square-foot space at 3912 W. MacLean Ave., near Pulaski Road and Armitage Avenue. The new brewery will share a wall, and private patio, with Off Color Brewing, another small Chicago craft brewery.

Armed with a federal small business loan for "around $1 million," Lewis said, Pipeworks has ordered a 30-barrel brewing system that will allow it to increase production to about 6,000 barrels of beer in 2015. The brewery has already grown from making 430 barrels in 2012 to a projected 1,800 barrels this year.

The new beer will be used to meet the demand that Pipeworks has struggled to supply in Chicago, Lewis said, including a significant increase in draft distribution. Pipeworks also plans to package beer in four-packs of 16-ounce cans, as well as in 22-ounce bottles — its primary method of distribution so far — for its more adventurous recipes, Lewis said.

Pipeworks will can five year-round beers, Lewis said: Ninja vs. Unicorn (an imperial India pale ale), Close Encounter (a hoppy stout), Blood of the Unicorn (a hoppy red ale) and two new beers — a pale ale made with Mosaic hops and a lower alcohol Belgian-style beer. The four-packs will be priced between $9.99 and $11.99.

The new brewery, which should be operating by early 2015, includes an option on additional space that could boost it to 60,000 square feet, but Lewis said further expansion will be more deliberate. Pipeworks — named by Rate Beer as one of the world's top 100 breweries in 2013 and 2014 — has easily sold every drop of its production so far, and extending to 6,000 barrels of beer likely won't slow its sales.

After that, "You're competing hard," Lewis said. Chicago-area craft breweries including Half Acre and Solemn Oath have also announced significant expansions this year.

"Growth beyond that would have to happen organically," Lewis said. "If the beer continues to sell itself, we'll continue to make more of it. The moment we have to start competing to sell beer, that's when we know it's time to slow down. Hopefully that won't come for a long time."

Further expansion could include distribution in Colorado, Wisconsin, Indiana, New York and California, he said.

Pipeworks' current brewery, at 1675 N. Western Ave., will be dedicated to production of sour beers, Lewis said. The brewery also plans to take possession of a building adjacent to the original location that will become a shop selling Pipeworks beer, including growler fills.

Agreed on the $2. If I concerned myself with the prices of the beers I want to drink, I'd be missing out on some of the tastiest beers I've tried.

It would actually be quite more than $2. Assuming 9$ for a bomber and 9-10 for 4 pk of 16 oz cans. An equivalent price for the cans in bomber format is about $3.50 vs $9. $5.50 is a bit more than $2 but hey people can request whatever format they want. I'll wait for the cans myself.

Well I assume they are hand packing them which will be time consuming. If that is the case timeframe could vary by a could weeks on delivery. I received an email from UPS saying a label had been created with a link for tracking.

I got that email about the label being created as well. Finally checked the tracking number after 3 days and it was delivered today and waiting for me at home. I think they were just filling so many orders, easy to run the packing slips, another to pack and fill 'em all. But not a bad turn around time, perfect for me to bust out the new Teku this weekend!

I know with the first round of orders by the end of the week I had received a shipping confirmation and everything. Just sort of weird that I never got anything. Not a huge deal, but just a little curious. I'll give it more time because I know they're doing it all by hand and it's a time consuming process. I just want that Teku.....

we actually use a 'service' and they create the shipping labels and tracking numbers automatically with UPS when the orders are placed through the webshop (the service is synced with the shop). However, they aren't set for delivery until UPS comes and picks the packages up from our building, which is usually about a week after the order is made... at least that's my understand of the process but i really don't know since mike, jeff and sam handle that part of things.

Has anyone ever had issues with Orange Truffle abduction? Opened one I've had cellared today (217-218 batch) and had a crazy tangy flavor to it I couldn't get past.

I walked right into that, haha. I've enjoyed every other abduction and enjoyed Orange Truffle when it was fresh but 9/10 months later it really had like a funky taste to it. I don't know, maybe a bad bottle?

I just drank my CTA last night.

Hadn't had it fresh. OMG the cherry is strong on that one. If I had to do it again I would have let it warm for 45 minutes. Can barely taste anything else but the cherry until it warms up.

Was going to crack the orange as well but went for something lighter. My friend couldn't handle so many stouts in a row

whilst poking around PWs website and pining over sold out tekus, I came across these two that also haven't been released:

    http://pdubs.net/machetes

    http://pdubs.net/grllz

not sure if they'll be next week's releases along with Passion Abduction, but I think it's safe to say two of three will be out very soon. Then there's that pesky Brown & Stirred that was FwB only. Wondering if that's all dried up already or if there are sloppy seconds for us guys that are, uh, hoping for sloppy seconds.

    NEW! Pipeworks Citra Saison
When we realized we had more Citra hops that we had originally thought, we figured why not simply pack a saison with scoops and scoops of this juicy, citrusy hop? It's a light, effervescent brew with great classic character from the yeast. It's a perfect brew for when the summer sun is HIYA! in the sky, or under a warm, shuriken filled sky.
    $10.99, 25.4 oz, 8% ABV

    Paradisiac
We brewed this beer with the man, the myth, the legend, P. Adam Vavrick, beer manager at Binny's LP. It's a wit beer brewed with lots of juicy strawberries and pounds of tart, tangy kiwis. It's a great summer fruited beer. Paradisiac was originally brewed as a one-off for an event at Norse Bar, but we liked it so much we're making it for a second time. This beer is named after Adam. Lots of people don't know this, but Adam's first name is really Paradisiac. Ha! We're kidding. But it is named after one of Adam's favorite songs.
    $9.99, 22oz, 9% ABV

    Pipeworks Simcoe
Having spent equal time studying at the Citrus School of combat and the Piney School of combat, Pipeworks Simcoe has garnered immense skills when it comes to fighting the horrible, evil, Bland Clan. Prepare your senses for the 1-2 punch of this Simcoe hopped Imperial IPA.
    22 oz, 9.5% ABV, $10.99

    On the Brewing Horizon:

NEW! Surrounded By Friends Machetes- A collab brew with Bad Apple. A wheat ale brewed with black currants, apples, and ginger.
NEW! Grillz - A golden ale brewed with grilled pineapple
NEW! Just Drink It Dummy- Double brewed with Sorachi Ace hops.

realizing now this post is confusing - in the previous post I was predicting what PWs will release next week. Hit on Grillz and Machetes - missed on the Dummy. That's where my two of out three Meatloaf reference was stemming from.

edit: I also hate Meatloaf the singer, love meatloaf the foodstuff. Pairs well with PWs....the food not the music.
