I heard about this today, some guy was selling a bottle of Pliny the Younger on eaby, which caused some backlash from RR brewing. I would like to see what people here had to say about it.

First thing to point out is that alcohol sales are prohibited by the Ebay policy you must agree to and can theoretically get you suspended/banned, though more likely the auction would be canceled and you'd be warned. Based on the number of auctions you do see, they apparently don't go out of their way to enforce it.

They always have been banned. The dodge in use those days was to advertise a collectable bottle with the contents not being intended for consumption so then the seller could technically claim they were not selling alcohol but rather selling the bottle and cap.

eBay not doing much to prevent beer sales, a quick search on there yields plenty of cans from hyped breweries. I guess they don't want to give up profits that come with auction fees. People talk about capitalism at work, but unfortunately for the people who just want to go to a can release to buy and drink beer, they are competing with aholes in line that are illegally reselling it and couldnt care less about the product, consumer or brewer.

Given there are about 1 billion items on eBay at any given time how would you suggest they enforce it, especially when many sellers also include Breweriana in their offerings?

So far as I can see, but I may have missed something, there is no beer on offer from such places as Hill Farmstead, Cantillon, or Russian River. So it appears the brewer needs to register a complaint, much as they did last time action was taken.

PTY is not bottled so my guess would be growler or hand bottled. Either way it's going to be in poor shape when it arrives to your door.

    Enjoy

This is my thinking as well. Why buy something that may be in degraded condition unless you really just want to put it on display.
