I recently had a coworker from Cupertino area come down to Austin for business, and I picked her up a bottle of a local brewery Adelbert's in Pflugerville, TX because she said she liked spiced belgians. Now its her turn to return the favor, when she comes back in April I've demanded she bring me a bottle of something you can only get where she lives. But she's new to craft beer, and I need to arm her, in the next two weeks, with some good ideas. I like all beers but really like IPA's and Imperial Porters. Any ideas from Cupertino/Sacramento-area BA'ers?

I thought Drakes Hopocolypse was excellent. CA only.

I haven't tried them, but Kern River gets a lot of good reviews. Same with Alpine, but I think both are SoCal only.

yep - KR Just Outstanding is really good, too. Also, Russian River isn't far from Cupertino.

a BA friend once sent me some Big Daddy IPA, which if IIRC, is Bay Area only. Seek it out. I had it against Sculpin and Pliny and was VERY impressed.

It's a cliche, but she shouldn't have any trouble getting her hands on Pliny and Blind Pig in that area. I'd put in an order for those. Kern JO is amazing, but can be hard to come by unless you're near the brewery which is in the middle of nowhere.

Just FYI, to OP and everybody else in this thread... Kern River does not distribute to Sacramento area.

The hoppy beers from Drakes and Speakeasy are good choices.

Good choice with Drake's but Hopocalypse season is over. Denogginizer is out though, and just as tasty a DIPA but a bit different.

Auburn Alehouse PU240 should be available in the Bay Area. Great DIPA, great price. Track 7 Big 4 strong if your friend gets up to the Sac area. Drakes is great as well as their brewery buddies at Highwater.

I am thinking Bay Area breweries:
Third Street Aleworks out of Santa Rosa, if you want to ignore Russian River. Some of theirs I really enjoyed more than I thought I would.
    Half Moon Bay
    Ale Industries

Tell her, that if she doesn't mind a short trip, to go to Bobby's Liquors and just ask Dee for help with this mission. Just to be aware, there is a ton of porn smack in the middle of the place (in case she would be offended or you'd get fired for sexual harassment sending a female co-worker to a shop with a ton of porn) and it looks sketchy, but it's legit. Dee is one of the nicest dudes around.

Drake's sounds pretty legit for the name alone... lol, This is a good list, hopefully she'll be able to find something like that there.

She lives in the middle of nowhere up north, so maybe...

KRBC is in the middle of nowhere in the middle of Cali. If I recall correctly, distro is limited to Kern County and occasionally SoCal.

Send her to Bobby's then. And I agree with all the Drake's love.

If you want something super local and special, make it over to Capitola to Sante Adairius Rustic Ales. They've been putting out more bottles recently including a Berliner weiss and a brett saison that have all been excellent, and there's always something good for growler fills.

While I agree with you (I've lived in SF for 15 years and have been drinking Big and Double Daddy since their inception), I never thought I'd see a BA admit this because Sculpin is held in such high regard. Cheers to you!

Believe it or not, Sculpin is not even on my top 5... My favorite IPA in existence(That I've had the opportunity to drink) is Avery's Maharaja... its just amazing. if this Pliny Edler is anything like that one, I'll be in hop heaven.

Had some Drakes Hopocalypse that tasted like onions and garlic. Must have been infected. Pissed out my ass the next day.

I second the suggestion of Sante Adarius Rustic Ales in Capitola. Less than a year old and definitely no distribution just yet. Think Russian River/Hill Farmstead/Anchorage-esque
