As you know, the only Spaten Okto I can find in my area is 8 months old, but it's still distinctly different in flavor than the HB or Weihenstephaner Wies'n Fest I've found -- much more so than I think Sinamar could add. And the Paulaner Amber I've had has been very close to Spaten (as always), but with that distinctly drier finish.

No sign of the Paulaner Wies'n Fest this year -- anyone else?

The only Augustiner beers imported to the US is the Edelstoff and the Maximator:

Shame it comes in those tiny 33cl bottles. And the label is a step down too; I wonder why.

I saw a store pull out LAST year's six packs....does that count?

That stupendous bar I always speak of has their Wies'n on tap. I will be having it, alongside with Paulaner's amber at the their Oktoberfest outdoor celebration in two weeks.

No bottles or cans in stores though.

    Just a bit of input....

The company I rep for sells Augustiner beers, as mentioned above only the Maximator and helles. It's sort of a mystery to me why they don't do their Oktoberfest at this time of year. Now that most AB houses have taken over distribution of Spaten, it seems there is much less focus and distribution of the Spaten Oktoberfest and most Spaten/Franziskaner beers, at least in these parts.

It should be added that the Augustiner prices are extremely out of whack, they wholesale for about twice of what most German beers sell for. Too bad, they could be moving a lot more beer.

You mean the Edelstoff, right? Never seen the basic Helles in the U.S.

Augustiner was expensive in Deutschland as well. Their Helles Lagerbier retailed for €1,15 per 500 ml bottle as of the last time I was there. By comparison, I think Spaten was €0,90.

Funny you mention the distribution - I was always surprised that I couldn't find more Spaten in Heidelberg, and when I could it was the Helles Lagerbier only. In fairness, Augustiner's Oktoberfest was never around either, I had to special order that one. Franziskaner could be found anywhere, though.

That must have been outside of Munich. In Munich, every supermarket, convenience store, and gas station seemed to have it for €0,55 per half liter.

I have seen you make this claim before and I have a hard time believing it. What year are we talking here, was this recent? It's true that I was talking about HD and have never sought to buy "regular" Augustiner in Munich. I bought their Heller Bock once in a Munich Craft beer store and it was quite pricey, but the store itself seemed to be pretty pricey (the Heller Bock was not in the nearest supermarket, though).

This was 2012. Just found this: http://www.supermarktcheck.de/product/15965-augustiner-edelstoff-bier

Looks like the price per liter ranges from €1,25 to €1,58 -- or €0,62 to €0.79 per half liter.

So, it has gotten somewhat more expensive, but not to the the €1,15 for a half liter mark.

EDIT: that was the Edelstoff. Looks like the regular Helles is in the same range, though: http://www.supermarktcheck.de/product/31011-augustiner-helles-vollbier

Any chance these are sale prices, ala the €11,00 case of Becks that we see occasionally? I have never seen Augustiner that cheap. Here is a distributor for HD:

    http://derueberbringer.de/index.php...ickel/augustiner-lagerbier-hell-20x0-50l.html

Case price of €17,49. I'm going to try to find somewhere that has per-bottle pricing. I'll edit it in or post it below. I'm 99% sure of the €1,15 price.

Edit: This is going to require a little research, I can't find a Getränkemarkt website that has prices for everything.

SPEAKING of Paulaner's Oktoberfestbier... remember this post from last year:

After having this beer, I've sworn off all Paulaner as Einheitsplörre.

What the heck is the Edelstoff anyways? It tastes like a Helles to me, but it's stronger than any I've had.

It's listed as a light lager here.

JackH and I are having this very debate as we speak. I put it under Dortmunder because the label says "Exportbier" and they already have a Hell. Jack thinks of it simply as a stronger Hell, with Dortmunder being a separate, distinct thing.

Exportbier - another can of worms...

I had always understood "Exportbier" as a different name for a stronger helles.

Just the everyday prices I saw. A couple I distinctly remember: a stand-up fridge in a small EDEKA near the Munich Marriott in Schwabing had bottles in the €0,50-0.60 range (we were staying in the Marriott, and I would stock up here while getting my kid a Muellermilch), and an Agip gas station right outside the Munich Airport...also in the €0,50-0,60 range (thought about grabbing a couple of bottles for the flight back using my remaining coins, but passed).

Interesting. Well, it tastes like a Helles, not really a stronger one. Same with Ayinger's Jahrhundert. Used to be listed as 5.5%, the recent bottles I saw were 5.2%. A bit higher than some Helles, but not appreciably so. And that one tastes all Helles to me as well.

I'll be honest, I have no clue what Dortmunder is.

And Beeradvocate either has the wrong picture here, and there's an actual Augustiner Light Lager. Or they need to change the name to Edelstoff, and not list it as a light lager. I have no idea why the name is wrong and the category, since they've both VERY wrong.

@JHDStein you are still in Heidelberg, yes? Would you be able to confirm the price of Augustiner Hell or Edelstoff for me? I know it's a strange request but I'll be eternally grateful! :grinning: At this point I just want to know I'm not crazy....
