Mango Mama Growler incident

Sounds like the assassination attempt was unsuccessful... Back to the drawing board.

 

I'm thinking a glass defect. Bummer

 

*camera pans away from you dramatically as you fall to your knees and yell* WHY GOD?!? WHYYYY?!!!?

Thats a double bummer; good beer gone and a sticky mess in its place.

You could pull a homer simpson and slurp it off the fridge bottom, or rag it up and pass it through a coffee filter to remove the glass and still drink it...jk. That sucks.

 

I think glass defect as well......

I had a growler explode in my fridge a few months ago....made a perfect punch-hole. 1 piece.

I'd bet on glass defect too. Of the dozens of Town Hall growlers I have drunk/traded, never had any problem with a growler. Sad face.

 

Obviously you have angered the beer gods, and must repent!

 

It sounds like they may be having similar issues to last years batch. I sent out two last year and both, while they didn't explode, had continued to produce carbonation on their journeys. When they were finally opened a week or less later, they both produced sky high geysers. Anything that was salvaged did not taste as it should have. I know of others who reported similar issues with the last years batch.

 

I guess I should plan on drinking mine tonight!

I had a Psuedo Sue growler from Casanova blow up in my car last spring. Sucks and a mess!

Not sure why it exploded but I'd be willing to bet TH gives you another one if you tell them your story.

 

Bummer, I'd go with as previously said, defective glass. I had a growler from Fitgers blow the bottom out of it while on the floor in my kitchen as it had warmed up too much. WAs fine in my basement and fridge but while waiting to go in my cooler to hit the road, blew.

Now I only use Stainless if possible, if not I drink it within 3 days. Fortunately where I usually go (Barley Johns) they'll fill anything I bring in which is usually my Stainless Brauler I got at Canal Park.

Defective growler might be responsible to some extent....though from what I was told when I asked at TH, the fresh whole mangos are added directly to the keg. Since the beer is not filtered, there'd be a lot of sugar for the yeast to consume. Even at fridge temps, my guess is that the continued fermentation from either a) commercial yeast or b) wild yeast on the mango skins caused the pressure to build to such a level that you had a bottle bomb. Probably similar situation to what occurred with the growlers dc sent out. I would drink any growlers of Mango Mama pretty quick after receiving....better fresher anyway, IMO.

 

Defective glass. When glass containers are produced in mass quantities its inevitable that some will have weak spots. Add in a pressurized liquid and its like Russian Roulette....tasty tasty Russian Roulette.

 

My mango mama just blew up in a box while I was waiting to ship it. It was packed and ready to go and I noticed the bottom of the box was wet sure as shit mango mama growler in a hundred pieces

 

sadness. I've had hundreds of growlers from TH and never had a problem.

 

Lost about 1/4 of mine to foam today when I opened it.

Yes, they will as will Canal Park where I bought the brauler (they'll fill any one, just have to seal it and put a sticker wher eit was bought and what's in it). I have heard "the law" stated many different ways and it comes down to what it seems, breweries just want you to buy their glass.

 

That's an oversimplification. Many breweries will buy back the glass at full deposit price. HammerHeart is one local example. I'm fairly certain Town Hall will, also.

 

Many breweries counter pressure fill their growlers and so when you bring back your glass they give you a new one. It doesn't make sense for town hall to sell their beer in a fitgers growler. It isn't just about the law or making money. There are many factors that go into it. Pretty sure both of the places you mentioned fill straight from the tap, making filling any growler a lot easier.

 

I think a lot of it is that breweries want to know for sure you have a clean growler and that is why most places allow you to only use ones with their name on it. They know it will be clean and free of defects.

 

Yes you are correct. I don't mind places that do that if I lived nearer to them just cause I do love me counterpressure filled ones. Then I'm not forced to drink em in a week.

 

Also an issue obviously, fortunately me being a homebrewer almost always have a bucket of fresh sanitizer to keep my stuff clean and ready to go .
