I'll be heading to Martha's Vineyard for a family vacation in a couple of weeks. Can anyone lend insight on the beer availablity/selection I might be able to find there? Any good liquor stores? Do supermarkets carry beer? Thanks.

I spent a long weekend on MV last month, and brought my own beer so I didn't really go out looking for beer - heck, didn't even stop in for a pint at Offshore. I would bring your own in case you don't find anything you are interested in.

I would take that advice, you won't be able to find much. Plus you'll be paying more, I would buy as much as you can off island and bring it over, that goes for everything. Are you driving from New York? Best thing to do is get off the Pike in Westborough, stop off at Julio's Liquors and stock up.

I'm actually flying from L.A., so I don't want to overload my luggage with stuff. We'll have some east coast people driving there, so I'll give them the heads up. Thanks for the responses.

They do fill growlers there and they occasionally have brewpub only beers like a barleywine and imperial stout.

A Julio's recco (complete with address) in a post about Martha's Vineyard, that's a New England forum classic!!

I would definitely stop at Offshore Ale Company. It's a fun brewpub. I'll be in MV all week next week and I'll be at Offshore more than once I can assure you that. I really enjoy their "hop goddess", though it's not always on tap.

Very close to Offshore is the Lookout Tavern. The last time I was there they had a few decent craft offerings, and if you get a spot on the deck, it's a nice place to chill. Their downfall is that they serve beer in plastic cups. But if you look past that, it's fine. They also have decent sushi, too.

As for bottle shops, I don't know of any - sorry. I've just never tried to buy bottles anywhere there... I assume it would be pricey. I bring my own from the mainland.

Keep in mind that 1/2 of the Vineyard is a Dry Island. Park yourself in Oak Bluffs and be happy!

Definitely bring your own if you want special stuff - assuming you are taking the ferry, it's trivial. That said, Jim's Packie has enough to get you through the week if you're just looking for locals or the more popular stuff.

Offshore is an awesome little brewpub. Hop Goddess is at the top of the list for beers I most want to be able to purchase locally - great stuff. The restaurant right across the street from Offshore had some decent beers last time I was there as well.

Brought all my own stuff last year, when I did stop into a liquor store the beer selection was modest at best. My advice would be the same as everyone's here, buy anything special before you go over.

Also hit up Offshore Ale, many a pint were had there last summer

I always visit Offshore when I head over there for day trips from the Cape. It never disappoints ... so another rec for Offshore.

Well, someone did say that Julio's has Framingham and beyond covered....

I'm surprised that a Hill Farmstead visit wasn't recommended too.

Beyond Framingham to the west, yes. I saw that he is a NY Rangers fan, asked him if he was driving FROM New York hence a stop off at Julio's would not be out of the way which has been suggested many times from people driving west to east using the Pike.

Don't forget Ebenezer's to complete the ridiculously suggested New England trifecta. I love it when someone is like "I'm going up to Bar Harbor in Maine, what do you recommend?", and 5 people chime in "oh you're in Maine - you must hit up Eb's!". Yeah, it's only a 4 hour detour in each direction...

When I go home, I usually stop at Kappy's in Falmouth. They've got a better selection than any of the spots on the Island and have more turnover I believe. In a pinch, I usually hit up Our Market in OB to avoid the summer traffic to get to Jim's.

I can't believe I have to do this. Let's pretend for a moment that he was from Albany (yes, we know he is from CA but just bare with me). Does this look ridiculous to you? The fact is I was just asking if he was driving from NY and offered a suggestion that would not be out of the way if he happen to be coming from that direction. Are we done now?

Albany, California maybe! Just jokes, and yes we are done now.
