I was just wondering if anyone tried this beer and was it close to the real thing? I was there Saturday and of course it was on the board but they were out of it. That was a big tease.

I've had the Westy 8 and the Westy 12 a couple times (Westy 8 is actually my favorite beer), and I've also had the Mid-Westvleteren a couple times at the Great Dane. To be honest, I don't think the Mid-Westvleteren is close to the real thing...flavor profile is a little simpler, mouthfeel doesn't match the Westy awesomeness, and the Mid-Westvleteren seemed heavy on chocolately-malt flavors instead of really featuring the yeast.

THAT being said, I think the Mid-Westvleteren is delicious. When I've seen it on tap at the Great Dane, it's an easy decision which beer I'll be ordering. Still a great beer  Hopefully they brew it again so you get to try it sometime.

thanks for letting me know. Sometimes you have to know what you missed. Thankfully I have a buddy's homebrew in the fridge that does come surprisingly close to the real thing.

I agree with Jake. Have had Westy 12 a fee times, but even comparing it to Rochefort 10 and ABT 12...The body lacks complexity and depth. But it is a good beer nonetheless, I enjoyed mine.

I just saw this thread. I drank Westvleteren 12 and 8 on a couple of occasions last winter. Both were outstanding. This summer I tried Mid-Westvleteren at Great Dane. I found it thin and boozy, and I didn't particularly enjoy it.

Had it at Odd Duck in MKE this summer-I agree on the "thinness" comment
