I see a very slight bowtie shape in this bottle too.

My first drain pour and I haven't drank it since. It's bad when you would drink Busch Light before something.

I completely agree with this. Tectactoe has a great point. While this is a CRAFT BEER forum for the most part, it is entertaining to see how a new package by Sam Adams is received compared to a new package for some BMC brand. Given that the majority of the users on here are here because they love craft beer it makes sense. You don't see too many BMC advocates on here and I'm sure this plays a huge role in it. If this were a BMC forum, you would probably get the opposite response.

All of us started out drinking shitty, piss beer when we were in high school or college and now our tastes and desires have evolved and moved on. It's like your first car. It was most likely a big hunk of crap but at the time it didn't matter because at least you had a car to drive around. If you look back on that now, the car you drive is probably much more grown up and sophisticated compared to your first car. Your priorities and tastes change and evolve.

Hold on... how is the beer going to get out of the bottle without the vortex grooves?

Miller Lite drinkers will now have to rely on gravity? Weak.

That's bottle manufacturing speak. Used to tell justify the ungodly amount of $$$$$$ they charged Miller to create this fantastic new bottle.

It'd be interesting to see how much of a sales increase or decrease happened as a result of this.

I'm fine with the psychology behind people's reactions to brands they dislike vs brands they do like... The same action can have different meanings depending on who is behind it.

That said, this bottle design is a different situation than the Sam Can. The Sam Can is an attempt to actually improve the flavor and aroma experience of drinking the beer directly from the can. It may or may not work, but the intention behind the design is different.

This bottle is designed to look different and generate conversation that leads to eeking out a few extra sales. Maybe it is also designed for a better grip. Neither of those things are really improving anything about the flavor or aroma of the beer.

The Vortex seems even worse. I can't find any explanation of what the vortex did or why they did it. It was purely a gimmick. Honestly, if they made any claims about releasing aroma or anything like that, I would think differently about it. But I can't find anything that says it was designed for any other reason than to be nifty.

So, a crappy beer gets a pointless bottle redesign - that's lame. An ok beer gets a redesigned can that is supposed to actually improve your experience of drinking the beer - that isn't lame until I taste it and decide if I think the design actually works.

The Vortex bottle was created by the bottle manufacturer, Owens-Illinois (which also supplies bottles used by many craft breweries. Just look for the embossed "O-I" around the base of the bottle).

Hmmm. Ok, well, that's still not really qualitative ;-) is the impact good? bad? What is the intended impact? :-)

And you know, maybe there really was a good idea behind it, but I still haven't seen it well explained. If you have any other links or anything, honestly, I'd be interested to find out what the point is.

I didn't know anyone drank Miller Lite in any other volume than by the pitcher.

I'd have more respect for Miller if they gave all that "re-design" money to charity.

I cannot see where there would ever be a change in the formula of any macro brewer because doing so would some how imply a flaw in the original product. That is not allowed. What has been so strange to me is that the attempts to come out with a new version (Black Crown, Batch 19) have been pretty weak. It would seem a shot at a really bold pilsner/lager (on line with a Victory Pils) might actually get a little traction. My suspicion is the cost--keeping it cheap is a big part of the marketing strategy.
