Minneapolis Brewery Bike Crawl

    Just something to think about on this cold day...

    18 miles, 7 breweries (Harriet, Northbound, Town Hall, Fulton, Dangerous Man, Indeed, and 612)

    Some friends and I are tentatively planning for June 1st to attempt this. The starting point is a friend's place. If you have route improvement suggestions or want to join, let me know and I'll keep you posted! I'm guessing there will be a lot of these happening this summer with all the tap rooms around these days...

    Just a couple of months until 75 and sunny!

    Crap, I'd love to do this but I may be doing the MPLS half marathon on the 2nd. Decisions decisions...Does anyone know what the DWI/BWI laws are? This could be a problem. What about renting a peddle pub?

    BWI is the same as a DWI. But far less likely to get fucked hard.

    I'll do something similar, not sure what day. I'll probably skip a few but it will be a silly day.

    The weekend is very much in the air at this point. And again, I wouldn't be surprised to see some version of this repeated several times throughout future summers... I think spread out over a long day, a beer per stop may be feasible. Especially with 10 oz options and food at Northbound or elsewhere.

    I'm thinking of starting in the morning with lunch at Northbound. An optional "afternoon only" route would start and finish at Town Hall perhaps?

    As far as I can tell, there is very little precedent in Minneapolis for BWI. Only marginally related, but interesting from today's news: http://www.startribune.com/local/west/187897971.html.

    I have done something similar to this in Saint Paul but it was pubs not breweries. A few logistics to think about- first the end of the night is a bit of a cluster F. Everybody is hammered and you all are on bikes! Find a place to store your bike or a spot at the end of the night to take a cab ride home, most cabs can't fit one bike let alone multiple. Second make sure you wear a helmet! Again I am going to let you know you will be hammered and on a bike. We were not so smart when we did ours and thank god nobody got hurt. We were on our way to stash the bikes and someone in my group tipped over on their bike and literally missed hitting there head on a steel hand rail by inches.

    Now all that being said it was an AWSOME time! Be safe and have an exit strategy were the things I took away from the event.

    I'm in. If we stay on low-traffic roads and try to hit up trails whenever possible, I wouldn't be worried about BWI...

    While I'm sure you can potentially run afoul of Johny Law by biking shit faced, it isn't equivalent to a DWI.

    Yep, I took a nasty fall on Cedar Lake Trail after ABR. My ribs and shoulder took the brunt of it.

    I had similar results on the same trail leaving ABR as well. Although there was a car also involved in my incident.

    I'd be more concerned about the injury factor than the law factor while biking and drinking. Bikes are not covered by the DUI statutes in MN. So you are good there. There are some other things you can run afoul of though.

    Just came to confirm that biking drunk is not illegal. I was biking home from Stub and Herbs down University when light rail construction was in full swing and was actually pulled over by a cop car. Just told me to be careful. That being said, always wear a helmet and use lights!

    Just an update - we've locked in Saturday, June 22nd for this "event". We'll start at around noon, probably arriving at Northbound around 12:30 or so for lunch.     Though the combination of the urban setting & beer might finally force me to buy a helmet. Though there are those who would argue it's too late to protect such things. Which is also why I don't where a cup when playing shortstop anymore. What? Who? OK. Right over there.

    Unless laws have changed in recent years (I'm talking the last 1-2) there are no BWI in Minnesota, there is in Wisconsin though...

    We did the test run for this yesterday. I've got to say, I'm loving the route. Surprisingly not too much traffic, and bike lanes or quiet streets the whole way: http://tinyurl.com/finalbikecrawlroute

    Send me a message if you more details. We're gathering at 11:30, leaving at 12 sharp. Probably at Northbound by 12:30, then Harriet, Fulton, Dangerous Man, Indeed, 612, and Town Hall. Start at the beginning, or meet us on the route. We've got 15-20 going for sure.

    Thinking of mapping out a bike route to Surly from downtown. Steel Toe is somewhat on the way as well.
