ah, interesting. I would never buy or trade for Monster Tones, so the $$$ & time to enjoy Monster Tones was worthwhile. And thankfully, Monster Tones met the hype IMO.

I really enjoyed Chaos Grid, more than MTV and Wizard blend vanilla.

I prefer these small events than events with unlimited tasters. I'm not a beast that can drink a ton.

Out of the bottle, the four beers average out to $2.07/oz. For the event, it averages out to $2.25/oz.

Expensive? Yeah, over $2/oz for beer is expensive. However, it's not far off of the bottle pricing and you have the benefit of enjoying it without opening a bottle (if you even had access to an Ultra set).

If it's not worth it to you, I can respect that entirely, but it's not like they're jacking prices up for this event.

We did not, but why would that be fucked?

    Defender Xul to the rescue!!!

The price is what it is. That's not the biggest sticking point. The idea of going to an "event" to try four 5oz tasters seems a bit silly, though. I'm not going to knock anyone that goes, I just have better things to do.

As for why it would be fucked if Theory got a chance at tickets before League, it would just be more insult added to injury after how these were rolled out.

I don't like that Theory exists. It diminishes the League. It does. And what's the point? To cater to a bunch of guys who pool their resources together but can't be bothered to have their own individual accounts??? I'm not seeing why that deserves special treatment.

League was the Golden Goose. Then for some reason I don't understand they invented a Platinum Goose. Now the Golden Goose seem lesser.

Not sure why you felt the need to add that considering I said the beer is objectively expensive and I can respect anyone who doesn't derive enough value to consider it worthwhile, but whatever floats your boat.

And yet, price is the only thing you cited when you said "hard pass."

MT has done a pretty good job of explaining why Theory exists, and I can tell you with certainty that there are a lot of people who roll solo and still got into Theory. It's up to you whether or not you believe that or just want to be bitter about Theory's existence.

Kinda disappointed to see that much vitriol from someone who has generally had a positive view of Modern Times in the past, but such is life.

    1) You defend everything MT to a fault. I once complained about the wording in an email and you questioned me on it like 3x until I told you to stop. Over the wording in an email.

    2) I also mentioned 4-5oz tasters. For an "event." I have better things to do even if they were 1/2 that price.

    3) I stand by my feelings on Theory. (Side note: Has anyone ever seen the Frazier episode where he and his brother finally get through the Gold door at their fancy spa only to realize there is a Platinum door? It's a classic.)

    4) I'm still happy with League and will be re-upping; it's just less special now that Theory is there.

Not to mention the added cost of keeping the locations open two hours later than normal (unsure if this applies to all, but definitely to Lomaland); staffing, utilities, etc.

Yes plz. My +1 would greatly appreciate a ticket.

I can neither confirm, nor deny this happened (it didn't) but I definitely had my fair share of a couple sets. Blending a full set into a shitty pitcher and then drank through silly straws that we ended up covering with googly eyes might be the highlight for me though.

It's the next seasonal Frosty. I'm not sure where Jacob and team source their southern hemi hops but I do know from recent tasting's that the Nelson harvest from Freestylehops in New Zealand produced some epic Nelson and Galaxy buds this year. Something tells me he's sourcing his product from the top tier farms down under. Space Ways and BW's 28 Haze Later are IMHO the two best NE styled shelfies being made.

    Cheers,

Really enjoying the DDH treatment on the August on-line batch of Effective Dreams. Aromatic with layer upon layer of rich complex flavors on a super soft creamy body.

Yes, ppl have been using it at Lomaland and Encinitas locations. Uncertain about the other locations since I don't frequent those.

This is my first year in Theory, was actually kinda surprised I got in (prob helped they expanded to 125 members). I don’t have a gang of friends to buy large amounts to split between us. It’s just my wife and I & honestly she drinks more of my stuff than I actually prefer but that’s not your problem. I bought the ultra sets that were offered to me, kept 2, gifted the third. Still going to the Evening of the Ultras cuz even tho I’ve tried the set, I’d like to enjoy it with other members in a private setting. This is a good opportunity to meet other League and Theory members, if you’re into that. 220 people at Lomaland location is not a small “event “ and can’t remember the last time another SD brewery hosted something like this for their membership club. Who knows, maybe they’ll surprise us with a special crowler fill or a meet and greet where you get to share a slice of pizza with @ModernTimesSteven. Heard a rumor on the streets that he’s addicted to pizza.

Oh and regarding that dude @Xul. I don’t personally know the guy, he’s actually made fun of me on here before (which I’ll never forget jk) but one thing I’m pretty sure about is that he isn’t defending MT no matter what. I’ve read positive remarks from him and also constructive criticism. And it’s not like he’s a walking billboard for Modern Times. He’s pretty approachable anytime you see him at an MT brewery or event, which is very elegant of him.

Hopefully you’ll change your mind on attending the EotU, last time I checked there’s still tixs left for all locations.

    Cheers!

    Rick

Just don't meet him in a dark alley. His approach-ability in that kind of setting almost hits negative numbers where you need to turn around and run away really fast.

Don't let my bitching about Theory scare you off. League (and Theory, I'm sure) is still the best run membership out there, the beer is TOP NOTCH, and the volume and variety of (regular!) offerings is great. It's really a no-brainer if you have the money and easy access to pickups.

I'm not Theory, and I've never once felt like the existence of that tier diminished what I have. I get the beers I want mostly, sometimes miss one or don't get a +1 and that's fine because it's all yellow piss in the end whether it was an elegant dessert stout or a DDH DIPA. Modern Times beer is expensive, and that's fine. It's top notch, they treat their employees well and they're good peeps. I'm okay paying a premium for those things, some people aren't. I'm passing on this one not because price, but because I turn into a pumpkin at 10pm because I get up at 5am everyday.

I've been traveling this week and I'm looking forward to busting into Lomaland on Saturday like the kool-aid man to get my case of DDH Effective Dreams. OH YEAH!

Mario getting a bit scared about getting Barry Booted out of Modern Times hahahaha

tbh I was considering adding MT League at some point but if they are gonna go out of their way to call a dude by his real name on an anonymous forum in an effort to "keep his humor in line" then its gonna be a hard pass from me.

let the dude joke about shoving golf clubs up people's asses and stay TF in your lane Modern Times...

leave moderating the BeerAdvocate thread to Beeradvocate mods instead of trying to use thinly veiled threats of removal from the club (and light doxxing) to bend the thread to your wishes please

Youre going to be soooo embarassed when you find the sub forum on here for telling people to shove stuff up their butts.

Seriously though... I appreciate the vibe theyre trying to maintain here. You can criticize all you want but why not keep it civil. Discussions are better that way anyway

Please explain how "I could tell you where to stick that 7-iron" is not civil?

he "could" tell him but is not telling him. it beats around the bush enough that I would call it 100% in bounds

IMO "What . . . no emails to critique?" was a break from civility more than the 7 iron comment

It’s a pretty simple sentence. I’ve seen enough of your arguments on here that I’m confident your grasp on the english language is strong enough to understand the meaning of what he said.
Frankly, i dont think what he said was terribly uncivil but i can see why some might take issue with it so i guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one
