Apparently this is actually brewed with Cheese and spices. Seems like a big novelty to me, but I would give it a shot...if a 4 pack of 16oz cans wasn't $24.

I get super bowl marketing, but im not sure if a craft brewer partnering with hormel of all companies will pay off at that price what to most people surely comes off as a gimmick. Unless this is a contract brew situation, in which case, get that Hormel money Modist.

Is Minneapolis in the superb owl? Is Hormel based in Minneapolis? Why is this happening?

Upon further research, Hormel is based about an hour and 45 minute drive away from Minneapolis, in Austin, MN, but it also appears that the Vikings are long done and out of the running for the superbowl.

That explains it. Kind of. I still don't know why a craft brewery would think this was a good idea. But hey, what do I know

However, I usually consume them as separate entities.

I’m sure Flying Dog is quickly looking to 1-up Modist in the Chili-Cheese beer catagory. Flying Dog has been pretty much all in for gimmick beers last couple of years, although just in recent 6 months or so they seem to be making a few more traditional standard beers and they’ve been quite good. I guess now that too many brewers are doing adjunct gimmick stuff now that niche is gone so it’s trending back to basics (hopefully).

I bet the Hormel folks are elated with their marketing department for getting this one done.

The brewery, on the other hand, may have second thoughts. But hey, gimmicky beers are big these days and I'm living under the stereotype that minnesotans love cheeze sauce type products so, maybe I'm off base and this will be a major win for Modist.

We should delete this thread of beer assness before other breweries pick up on doing the same for the press and recognition here.

I can’t tell if you are being facetious or serious. I am leaning towards facetious. You can make a beer that is chili inspired without using the actual ingredients. I have been to a homebrew festival that did a taco beer and it was good for a 2 oz pour. Couldn’t imagine drinking a whole pour. Also, for homebrew con someone brewed a Chicago dog beer with actual hot dogs and most people liked it.

My use of the winking emoticon should have given it away — although I really am from Minnesota, and Hormel is ubiquitous up here (which explains a lot about our collectively adventurous palate — that right there is pure, adolescent sarcasm.)

Minnesota breweries are sort-of well known for their gimmick and “stunt” beers, inspired by everything from the Minnesota State Fair to our own, long history of truly adventurous home brewers, so this Hormel Chili Beer is not too surprising.

And while I can imagine enjoying a two ounce of pour of most anything at a homebrew fest (I was a homebrewer in college, after all) I still can’t imagine enjoying Cock Ale, no matter how much I love fried chicken.

    Dear god no.

I like spicy. I like beer. I do not like them together.

I have a confession. I don’t find 99 percent of beer to be “bad.” Budweiser? It’s bland but im certainly not going to turn it down if a friend offers it. But the one horrendous beer I’ve had, the only one I can truly say is awful, is Ed’s Cave Creek chili beer. Nope nope nope nope nope

I will never understand why craft brewers think that cobranding with some industrial food conglomerate will be good for their brand. My opinion of Modist is permanently tied to cheap canned chilli that is the antithesis of a "craft" product. I haven't paid for a prairie product since they did the oreo collaboration.

The two product classes just aren't compatible in my mind. Are you a high end artesinal product? Or are you the lowest common denominator canned in the factory in between runs of BBQ baked beans and sloppy Joe filling? Cause this marketing points to the latter but the pricing points to the former, and that's a bad deal.
