Morrisons - Cheap Chimay Red and Schneider Weisse

Cheers for this- got a new 'flagship store of the future' Morrisons opening next to my work in the next couple of weeks, so will be def keeping an eye out for this and any other bargains. I think by 'store of the future' they mean it'll have those misting things over the fruits and veg that the yanks have had for years.

 

They have that in our local Morrison's too, plus a whole range of things like exotic tomatoes.Quite a lot of interesting beers too with one at £1 a bottle or 2 for £2.
We had a village greengrocer with a misting arrangement but it only worked when it was raining or foggy

They have the veggie misting in Germania as well....

Ha - the fruit & veg sections have pipes that coat the produce in a fine spray. This is just directed at the veggies - it doesn't fog up the general atmosphere. Keeps them cool and fresh (though whether it actually achieves anything except in the mind of the customer is another matter).

 

God, I've lived in the UK so long now I've almost forgotten about misting vegtables at the local supermarket. Still, things have really improved vegwise in UK supermarkets since the early 90s where even finding a ripe red tomato was liike an episode of Challenge Anneka. Of course my first UK supermarket experience was in Glasgow so that may not have accuately reflected the reality then across the UK...

Getting back to the OP, the prices seem pretty good though I'm actually not a really big fan of either beer given my infamous ranting about Chimay's long standing late 80s brewing equipment blunder & the (at least to me) dominance of cloves whenever I taste Schneider Weisse.

Only a year or so ago Tesco charged less that £1.50 for a bottle of Duvel whereas now its about £2.09. I hope all this doesn't mean big price hikes are on the way.

 

Chimay is my favourite trappist brewery I even have a chimay pen for exams! Though red is my least favourite, and their tripel is inferior to the westmalle tripel...

 

I'll be calling into my local Morrisons on Thursday and have a look. I bet these are not on offer where I am. As for the Hedgerow Porter, I enjoyed that but as for the Hot Cross ale, yikes!! I thought It was crap. The Chimay red is only average at best these days. I have not had the 75cl bottles or Grand Cru in the Magnum for a while but the Quality in the bigger bottles is or was much better than the 33cl bottles. Now, if they have Duvel reduced! No, better not. I have just put an order in for £130 of beer on the internet so will have to watch my wallet for a few weeks. Besides, I have exhausted the beer range at Morrisons and want something different.

 

I've only ever had the SW weizenbock which was great.

 

Went into Morrisons earlier to look for the Chimay - f*** all on the shelves. They had every other beer under the sun, including the Schneider Weisse. What a waste of a trip. Oh well....

About the Duvel - I remember a point last year when it was available at Tesco/Sainsburys for £1.27; an absolute bargain. I picked up quite a few and I've still got some of them......mmmmmmh!

 

Screw the Schneider Weisse actually go to Sainsburys and get the Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen!

 

Hate to say it but these days the UK supermarkets don't offer much variety compared to years ago. In the 'olden days' Sainsbos carried Aventinus while the long gone Safeway stocked Dogfish Head WW Stout and its just never been the same since.

 

WW Stout! Incredible....I remember a year or so back when Tesco stocked Flying Dog's Gonzo Imperial Porter. I can imagine something more routine like DF 60 minutes appearing in a supermarket, riding the current trend for US craft, but WW Stout would be something else....

 

I fully agree with you in that since Safeway was swallowed up by Morrisons the beer range in supermarkets has never been the same. I got some incredible beers in Safeway, Alaskan Winter Ale, Alaskan Smoked Porter, 4 or 5 Brooklyn beers plus the 4 packs of beers such as Duvel, Chimay and Pauwel Kwak with the glassware.

 

When Safeway had stocks of the World Wide Stout in around 2004/05, it was at the higher ABV than it is brewed today, 21% and priced at £7.99 I think it was for one 335ml bottle. Ah! those were the days.

Yeah, I thought £8 for a small bottle of beer was a bit too steep but then I thought f*** it, bite the bullet. I aged mine for 12 months and upon drinking it I thought "Is that all there is to it for a beer at such strength?" I felt cheated. Now of course I am much wiser to the fact that some of these strong beers their taste or feel belies their strength. Sam Calagione said later that no more WWS would be produced for the UK (only here and California was the %ABV upped to 21%) as it was not very well received on these shores. That probably explains why their 120 minute IPA or Old School are never seen here. Oh how I would love to try one again though (the WWS that is).

 

No Dogfish Head is seen here, they stopped exporting from America a year or so ago, must have been 2009/10 as my bottle of Palo Santo Marron was bought from one of the last shipments and it was bottled in 2009.

Also, Duvel is £1.30-ish in Sainsburys.

 

Sadly, I think you'll find that Duvel is now over £2 a bottle in all the major supermarkets (might be partly due to the change in taxation last year).

Meh i've had Duvel before i'd rather spend money on something new.

 

Glad to see I'm not the only one thinking this way.

It's not so much that the 80% of bottles on the shelves UK-wise are brown and boring - that's the market and will always be the case, I suspect - it's that the other 20% isn't inspiring either.

Our local Asda - East Midlands - stocks Tunnel from the West Midlands. Sainsburys have their own label stuff which is pretty poor IMO. Tesco used to throw in a few curveballs but has becone hit-and-miss. Morrisons, I don't visit often enough to have an opinion.

M&S has just about the best supermarket beer range I can think of right now in terms of decent UK bottles.

The one that's blindsided me is Aldi. I've been sent a selection for review and some of the Eurolager is actually very drinkable. And cheap.

 

I really like Marks & Sparks beer. For some reason though Southwold/Adnams beers are better than the actual Adnams branded bottles. Can't wait to try the porter from Robinsons too.

 

Saw Duvel in my local Sainsbury's today, £2.09 a bottle.

 

I wasn't impressed with the M&S range of beers when I was last in, maybe that's just a Glasgow thing It was quite a small food hall though

I went to a Whole Foods for the first time and they have a good range, if a bit pricey

Every person there (apart from me) is calling out for boring brown beer which you can already get EVERYWHERE else. To be honest, if I compare what was available in my local Sainsburys or Tesco 4-5 years ago to what I can get now- I'm really not going to complain that much. If I want more craft then I'll buy from the source/order online/get it from a pub. Major supermarkets will always cater to the brown beer masses because this is what turns a trick.

 

Someone requesting Blandford Fly, Specled Hen (sic), ? You can get that in loads of places.

 

Just a few years ago Tesco also carried Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout.

The problem with UK supermarket is just the amount of uninspiring beers on the shelves and the totally unchanging nature of so many lines.
There are still jems out there but them seem to far rarer than they once were.

 

Many of the can be considered gems, just gems you've had 5+ times before lol.
