This bill is often referred to as one of Lazy Magnolia's bills - but it's a law and will affect the new start up breweries in the state as well. Now, MS brewers can brew beer for sale outside of Mississippi that is legal in the state it will be sold.

This law goes into effect immediately, so Lazy Mag and others can start brewing beers today that are up to 8% abw, and they can be sold on July 1st.

They can brew over 8% to be sold in other states, but those beers can not be sold in MS.

Of course, this will definitely be useful later on when trying to raise the cap over 8% in MS.

Dang, I just reread that - and apparently in committee somewhere, they changed it from "this bill will go into effect when signed" they changed it to July 1, 2012.

I wouldn't worry much about that. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it'll go down the way we'd prefer, similar to how distributors aren't supposed to have any 5%+ABV beer in their possession before 7/1/12. I have assurances from people who are able to give assurances that we'll have high-gravity beer on the shelves and on tap on 7/1.

No doubt we'll have beer on the shelves, but it won't be a Lazy Magnolia celebratory brew. They can't legally start making anything over 5% (well, it'll actually be 8%) until July 1st. So, there won't be a "brewed in Mississippi" high gravity beer on the shelves on July 1st. It was speculated that as the bill was originally worded, if signed - they could start brewing a beer for sale out of state and have it ready by July 1st.

I should have been more clear on my "dang".

It's all good! Glad to hear we're moving forward and I'll be saving some gas money in the future.

Once the folks at Lucky Town start brewing for Mississippi this winter, they'll be able to fire up some higher ABV stuff, too. I think they plan to serve our state first, then broaden later. Look for their Ballistic Blonde and The Flare Incident stout on tap first. Both are yummy.
