I’m hitting SoCal in a month or so, and will be checking out some El Traffico while I’m there. I was banking on a trip to Modern Times Dojo in downtown LA, but alas, that spot has closed a while back now.

Any recommendations on other spots near downtown LA/U$C?

Highland Park Brewing and Homage are on the same street. Hit up both

What @UnknownKoger said. And, as I suggested in Discord, I'd consider swinging by Mumford in Skid Row too.

If you plan on taking the Gold Line to Chinatown to check out the previously mentioned breweries and are interchanging trains at Union Station, I also recommend adding Homebound located within Union Station. I see very little written up on the brewery since it's reopening, but the food is excellent and the various styles of beer they make are all dialed in. IMO the most beautiful brewery and best food in that area.

Grab a beef dip at Phillipe’s and, as already stated, head to Highland Park Brewing.

Didn't know this ... EXCELLENT! Will be definitely hitting this when taking the $10 weekend Metrolink back to OC ... thanks!

The Douglas is a little outside of downtown in Echo Park and has good bar food and a great beer selection. Crawfords has some of the best fried chicken in LA, and a decent beer selection and is close toThe Douglas

Best bar in LA is The Slipper Clutch, inside of Chatterbox. Not the best as far as beer goes, but cheap highball cocktails and loud obnoxious music in a NY bar setting.

Thanks to all for the feedback. This helps a lot. I knew about Discord, but as we'll be walking around (to/fro Banc of California stadium), I'm still figuring out the logistics of stumbling around Skid Row.

Good look - and might pop up there. We'll be taking the Expo Line from Santa Monica out to downtown. As I remember, the Dojo was super close to a station. Heading up to Union Square might require my lazy ass to Uber up there.

Oh f*** yeah on the Phillipe's! It's been a minute. That settles it: we will be Ubering around the downtown area (maybe even to Discord).

You can take the Expo line from the stadium to 7th St/Metro Center and then jump on the Red line to get to Union Station. Phillipe's is right across the street from Union Station, and HPB/Homage are a short walk over to Chinatown (or one stop up from Union Station on the Gold line).

HPB/Homage is the best spot for beer in LA, definitely don’t skip them.

Also very close to HPB and Homage is Moo's Craft BBQ right across the 5; killer Texas-style BBQ and they always have a really good tap list (mostly southern CA stuff).

Thanks for the background on Moo’s. They were on my radar for the Q - hearing what their beer rotations are like makes this seem like a spot to hit.

I think Moo's is one of the best BBQ in LA and well-worth visiting, just know that it's about a mile from Highland Park/Homage through not the most pedestrian-friendly area so probably a good situation for Uber - but if you do make the walk, on the way is Angeleno Wine Co. with decent-enough local wines; and if it's during opening hours, Cielito Lindo has first-rate taquitos for take-away, and there's David Chang's restaurant Majordomo
